Semi regular. Did three and a half rounders. Believe there is more rail replacement work in the pipeline but can only work it when resting at the weekend

Last weekend saw DL4 operated by Metroline between Hammersmith and Wimbledon and DL5 mainly operated by Arriva, but also assisted by RATP, Abellio, GAL (who provided for example EN13) and Reading Buses. This weekend there is the large Jubilee/Metropolitan Line closure with: Service JL-1: Finchley Road - Wembley Park . Service JL-2: Stonebridge Park - Stanmore. Service ML-1: Harrow-on-the-Hill - Stonebridge Park . London Overground Saturday and Sunday; T Walthamstow Central - Barking and Sunday only J - Gospel Oak-Seven Sisters, Alongside Sunday Morning only L1/2/3 Hackney - Seven Sisters - Cheshunt/Enfield/Chingford. Trams also has a closure Arena to Beckenham Junction covered last weekend by Arriva Kent and Surrey, presumably due to Arriva London's work in Wimbledon.

Firstly there seemed to be some confusion over what JL-1 and JL-2 actually where... Sullivan Buses were in charge of JL-2 (Finchley Road - Wembley Park) with assistance from RATP and CT-Plus. Sullivan's making full use of there temporary enlarged double deck fleet, with the additions of E58 (LK08DXO) and such like. Abellio operated JL-1 (Stonebridge Park - Stanmore) using mainly the E400's from the U7. Arriva operated ML-1.

Abellio operated JL-1 (Stonebridge Park - Stanmore) using mainly the E400's from the U7. Arriva operated ML-1. Abellio also operated ML-3, the early/late direct trips between Baker Street and Harrow-on-the-Hill. I took a ride on the JL-2 on Saturday early evening. Quite a straightforward route with lots of roundabouts. I daresay some people wouldn't have wanted to walk to the Kingsbury Circle bus stop and instead put more pressure on local buses to get to Wembley. I'd never been down Fryent Way before, quite a nice surprise to go through a country park in that part of London. New Cross Gate to West Croydon is my route for this Sunday. I'll almost certainly ask nicely for an E400 for that.

I drove the New Cross Gate to West Croydon route last weekend. It's a Southern operated replacement service, though I presume there is a contribution from the Overground.
The route
The service runs every 10 minutes all day. Stops served are New Cross Gate, Brockley, Honor Oak Park, Forest Hill, Sydenham, Crystal Palace, Anerley, Norwood Junction, Selhurst and West Croydon.
The route follows the 172 from New Cross Gate through Brockley to Brockley Rise, then the P4 through Honor Oak Park and Honor Oak Park Road to Forest Hill, London Road. The route then follows the 122 through Sydenham to Crystal Palace, then the 157 line of route through to West Croydon.
Penge West was not served. Announcements were made advising of routes 176/197 from Sydenham and the 354 from Anerley. There is a routing via Penge West on the map, it also says that only single deck buses are permitted to go that way.
Selhurst is served - although it's not on that railway line, it's on the line of route. I suspect the stop is stipulated to assist Southern staff based at Selhurst depot, but that bus stop always has quite a few passengers waiting to go quite long distances, despite there being rail services to London Bridge and Victoria available.
The dead run from Morden Wharf (by the Blackwall Tunnel) to West Croydon wasn't very straightforward - I went via the A2, Kidbrooke, the South Circular, Verdant Lane, Southend Lane, Beckenham Hill, Beckenham War Memorial, Elmers End and Addiscombe.
Loadings
This service was busy. I did an early shift and there were 40+ people getting off at New Cross Gate on each trip. From around midday the passenger flow was in both directions, then busier heading out of town from mid-afternoon.
Running times
The route is timed for Sunday pre-shopping hours. There's no hope of running to schedule during the day - another 15 or so minutes are needed. However there generous layovers at both ends so buses had more than enough recovery time.
Vehicle Choice
Euro 5 Enviro 400. The route is always well loaded and hilly so something with a bit of grunt worked best. The Es at MG are in superb health.
There were buses out from C, MG, RR and the BX commercial fleet. SEN51 was also out in the afternoon.
Summary
Lots of left and right turns so you have to know what you're doing. Not a huge number of hazards, just the usual with Honor Oak Park Road - trying not to tip the bus over on the cambers and some overhanging trees which need trimming.
The route was calm and well controlled. Not a single bus overtaken.
In the past the route operated 6bph London Bridge - West Croydon, with an additional 6bph between New Cross Gate and Anerley. Often there were multiple operators providing buses with a lot of bunching, overtaking, gaps in the service and buses going off route. Sometimes I'd be asked to lead another bus the whole way. There'd be significant runtime variances depending on how well the driver handled the Old Kent Road and the bottleneck on Dartmouth Road in Forest Hill. However all that stopped a while ago and the route is much better for it.
Route difficulty rating - 2/3 (intermediate)
Enjoyability - 4/5 (fairly enjoyable)
Next route review - TBC

Good morning all. Does anyone have an idea of what operators will be on the SWR replacement between Barnes - Teddington? Besides, where do buses pick up at Barnes?
