Mark Hopwood did well as interim manager at SWR, before he steadied the ship they were appalling. I hope Claire continues improving the franchise.

First will continue to operate SWR and Avanti West Coast, but under new management contracts. SWR's current ERMA (Emergency Recovery Measurements Agreement) expires at the end of March 2021 and the new contract will run until 1st April 2023, whilst AWC's ERMA expires in March 2022 and the new contract will run until 1st April 2026. Extensions of up to two years may be awarded (rather like TfL's bus contracts).

SWR have become the latest train operator to join Realtime Trains’s “Know Your Train” feature. For those of you that don’t know, Know Your Train is a brilliant new feature that allows you to see what train you will be allocated on a particular service as well as what facilities are available onboard your train. blog.realtimetrains.com/2020/12/south-western-railway-join-know-your-train/

Great work from those involved. Hopefully GTR will be joining soon ?

Previously unit allocations were only available on TRUST so it’s great to see operators sharing allocation data with third party websites like Realtime Trains

So just to confirm, I have until 2021 to grab a ride on the old tube stock before they go? Yes. Barring unforeseen delays, 3rd January may well be the last day of the 483s. Still baring unforseen delays.... youtu.be/DWuebB1zO18

Island Line will close for up to three months in early 2021 to allow infrastructure upgrades, ahead of the introduction of the Vivarail class 484s (ex-District Line D stock) later in the year. The upgrades will include a new passing loop at Brading so that a regular 30-minute interval service can be operated. Rail replacement buses will operate, including a minibus shuttle on Ryde Pier. There will be five 2-car 484 units, each will carry up to 188 passengers (86 seated and 106 standing). Under normal circumstances four units would be rostered for service each day, operating singly. At peak times it will be possible to operate one four-car train carrying up to 376 passengers. Interesting article from "Bus and Train User" (Roger French, former CEO of Brighton & Hove Buses), arguing that a better service could be provided more cost-effectively by converting the Island Line into a dedicated busway. He notes that whereas every passenger journey on the Island Line is subsidised to the tune of £5, Southern Vectis' bus services are by and large operated commercially. busandtrainuser.com/2021/01/03/could-buses-have-replaced-the-1938-stock/

Have heard elsewhere that the Class 442’s are to be permanently withdrawn from use and will be replaced by Class 458’s, which SWR are now retaining. Oddly they are converting them back to 4 coaches but regearing them so they have the ability to work long distance services. Seems like a lot of £££’s down the drain if you ask me, considering that the 442’s had all been refurbished and retractioned.
