Internal newsletter reports Feltham sidings are to open during the upcoming timetable period. The odd 450 and 458 have been spotted on occasion.

National Rail has published a new report, "South West Main Line Strategic Study", which looks at the current and future capacity issues affecting the South West main line, and suggests possible short-term and longer-term measures to alleviate those issues. It says the the eventual construction of HS2, which would put suburban trains into a tunnel from Wimbledon and add an extra pair of tracks between New Malden and Wimbledon, is "crucial". An interim measure would be resignalling, which would allow trains to operate at 90-second intervals instead of the current 2 minutes. Flyovers at Woking which would reduce the number of conflicting movements are also recommended. A good summary from ianVisits: www.ianvisits.co.uk/blog/2021/08/02/crossrail-2-critical-to-prevent-overloading-of-trains-into-waterloo/The full report: content.tfl.gov.uk/step-free-tube-guide-map.pdf

Some interesting ideas though on how capacity could be increased without Crossrail 2. It’s always interesting to see how quickly platform 5 at Wimbledon fills up even with trains every few minutes in the morning, well pre-COVID anyway.

450067 has been given a livery dedicated to key workers, and also to our colleagues lost to Covid: Seems rather polarising on social media (see comments) —

However, as a key worker myself, I'm perfectly fine with the display - at least SWR acknowledges all key workers and not just the NHS!

Agreed, though I thought the clapping for the NHS was a good thing it felt like it was only for carers and not for supermarket workers builders etc

South Western Railway does not intend to restore pre-pandemic frequencies on its Dorking and Guildford via Epsom services. Plans for the new timetable from December 2022 see each route remaining at two trains per hour at peak times, dropping to hourly off-peak. The news has attracted widespread criticism and will be discussed by Surrey County Council at a communities, environment and highways select committee meeting on 16th September. www.getsurrey.co.uk/news/surrey-news/south-western-railway-might-cut-21282431

Or as an alternative, reinstate the Guildford - West Croydon service. No suitable turnbacks. Even allowing for that, I don’t think it would be a massively attractive service, particularly for people who use Bookham who would lose their London service completely. To me, Victoria - Epsom - Effingham Junction - Guildford as a regular 2 tph service looks attractive, and also gives Effingham Junction to Guildford stations the option of two London termini.

I am sick and tired of seeing overcrowded trains at Epsom. Even yesterday (a Sunday) my train to Wimbledon which had originated at Guildford was rammed. In pre-covid times, we even received 6tph from Waterloo, with 2tph extra which terminated at Epsom, with the Dorking trains running on a faster calling pattern (missing out Motspur Park, Stoneleigh and Ewell West IIRC). I'm not suggesting that they restore the 6tph peak service but 2tph is a pathetic solution. A big fat no from me

The Island Line could be reopening soon, as driver training with the new 484 stock has now commenced.
