Come on! These have just turned eighty. With Networkers on their way out along with Plastic Pigs, this is silly. This line is going to be the 318 of the rail network. Network Rail? Maybe you need to read the article.

If you read the article, it says they’re going to a heritage railway so the comment about Networkers and whatever Plastic Pigs are isn’t relevant here

The Island Line could be reopening soon, as driver training with the new 484 stock has now commenced. Network Rail has announced that the delayed reopening of the Island Line will be on 1st November, subject to the final round of train safety tests being completed successfully.

If I’m honest, I’m happy that the ‘Plastic Pigs’ or ‘Piggies’ are going, simply because it means the Class 458s can keep going 🤣 (albeit as 4 car units!) The seating and traction motors of the Class 458s at the moment is soo nice, as are the door chime sounds. I’m just sad that soon those plastic Aventura things are gonna be replacing them, I’m preparing myself for ironing board seats! I used to love driving the 458’s. Quick and nippy units when everything works and such a good braking system. I really hope they sort out some of the cabs through when they modify them for the mainline. The chairs bounce around and you get drafts at low speed, how they will cope going 90mph is going to be interesting for the crews! Never got to sign the pigs when they returned but the cost of project however sentimental was probably underestimated from the start

The toilets always seem to smell — and for guards, it’s difficult to patrol and dispatch, due to door controls only being in the cabs and the door by the universal loo. And the PIS os a bit ‘non-standard’. Other than that, comfortable seats, and they have aircon(!) unlike the 455/456 I usually work. Not as fast as 707s but very spritely As for the 442’s, I used them a couple of times, and they were really showing their age despite the refurb. They rather reminded me of the First Great Western Mk3 coaches (post refurb).

It duly opened, on an initial hourly frequency which will increase to half-hourly from the December timetable change. Roger French has been. The trains themselves are generally liked and appreciated but late running and teething problems marred the re-opening day. busandtrainuser.com/2021/11/02/welcome-back-to-the-island-line/

Same for me I would like to travel on those ones and do the one on the Bedford line. You could catch an East Midlands Railway class 360 to Bedford, and may eventually be able to return to London from Bletchley on an LNWR class 730. I also hope to ride a TfW class 230 in conjunction with a MerseyRail class 777 once these are in service.

Despite the Class 701’s still not being in service, the Class 455’s have started departing for storage in Long Marston. 455726 went on Monday and 455847 (out of service since last year after being side swiped at Wimbledon depot but was repaired) went today, both by road. It has been suggested that this is purely because there’s a lack of space at Wimbledon depot and they are not off lease just yet but that remains to be seen. I’m sure I’m not the only one who thinks SWR will soon face a huge problem with stock shortages during the new year, especially as it’s rumoured that all 24 456’s will be off lease by the end of February. There are also a number of 455’s, 456’s and 458’s which have been out of traffic for a while and three 455’s have been stood down as they are out of miles before their next major overhaul.
