Despite the Class 701’s still not being in service, the Class 455’s have started departing for storage in Long Marston. 455726 went on Monday and 455847 (out of service since last year after being side swiped at Wimbledon depot but was repaired) went today, both by road. It has been suggested that this is purely because there’s a lack of space at Wimbledon depot and they are not off lease just yet but that remains to be seen. I’m sure I’m not the only one who thinks SWR will soon face a huge problem with stock shortages during the new year, especially as it’s rumoured that all 24 456’s will be off lease by the end of February. There are also a number of 455’s, 456’s and 458’s which have been out of traffic for a while and three 455’s have been stood down as they are out of miles before their next major overhaul. It’s shocking how behind the class 701 are even with covid. At this rate the franchise will be over before they are all in service.

I’m guessing the date of three class 45* series are to be scrapped? 455’s and 456’s yes, I’m not sure who else would take them. GTR don’t need them (in my view the 456’s would be useful to have to extend all metro services to 10 car, but then that would create issues with DOO operation and some platforms are not long enough). The 455/7’s would be ideal short term Class 150 replacements for Northern as bi-mode units but they would need to run on batteries which the technology isn’t there for yet I think. 30 458’s meanwhile are being retained and converted back to 4 coaches to be used on the Waterloo-Portsmouth services replacing the 442’s but the ex Class 460 units (458531-536) will go off lease, and will probably go for scrap. Again they’d be good for Northern but these 6 units do not have a pantograph well (the original 458’s do) so do not support overhead wires.

In the meantime, some 450’s have been reallocated onto Reading /Windsor services (with more to follow), which should release some 455’s back to ‘Metro’ duties and hopefully less of a shortfall.

according to Real Time Trains the 19.22 Waterloo to Weybridge is being operated by 15 coaches surely an error in the system.

458507 and 458517 are apparently heading off to Long Marston tomorrow for their modifications, I think it’s part of the programme contracted to Alstom to refurbish the 458s.

A reliable source on Twitter has posted that all 24 Class 456's will be going off lease from the 17th January when their reduction plan is implemented. All this while their Class 701's are nowhere near entering service, makes perfect sense to do right? I suspect that SWR are going to be in this reduction timetable for a while until their 701's eventually enter service, although no more 707's are going to Southeastern for the time being as I understand. In the meantime, It'll be sad to see the 456's going after having them countless times in their Southern days and with SWR too. They will be missed.

I should take out a bet on the contract finishing before the 701s are in service 😂😂

I trained drivers on these when they came over. Even drive them in green on the SWR network. Always have a bond with them.

Instead trains are fewer and shorter.
