That website explains what it is, but not how it actually works. As a techie type I wouldn't mind knowing a bit more about the technical side. Specificaly what the on board equipment is, how it interacts with control and the countdown display system.

Its probably a sat-nav which instead of announcing turns it announces stops at least 100metres before the bus gets to them.

Its probably a sat-nav which instead of announcing turns it announces stops at least 100metres before the bus gets to them. That's half the answer. It works on GPS technology (Global Positioning Satellite systems) which determine the exact location of individual vehicles to pre nominated waypoints on the given route.

Then carnt they pre plan diversions then I think they can. When The Drive in Ilford was closed between Eastern Avenue and Wanstead Lane for a couple of weeks, I seem to remember an automated announcement on the 145 and 366 to the effect that the bus was running via Beehive Lane. They display didn't show this though, and showed a double star IIRC, as it does on the 366 when on the hail and ride section in Sunnyside Road and Eton Road.

Yes but was that long term diversion rather than a 2-3 hour central london diversion

Perhaps one of our drivers could make a more informed comment on this?
