What's the shock? I know him. And I know the person that trained him. Very well. And they are two of the best drivers the District line (and most probably LU) has!

"1,300 young people apply for the apprenticeship scheme, with just 15 being selected. "
For apprentice's starting this september it was 2,000 for 12 places.
"He could not complete his on-the-track training until he turned 18 as he was not legally allowed to – but within a week he began the four-month, hands-on training course. "
All LU staff have a track knowlage thingy, so I have no clue what they are talking about there.
"12:10pm Friday 21st August 2009"
He has been a driver for ages, I duno why they are only reporting on it now.

When no politicians have been caught stealing from the public, Prince Phillip is sober and has not made any huge 'gaffs' speaking in front of the press, no major natural or man made disasters have happened, and so on, THEN they dig into the 'news' barrel and pull out this sort of cr@p!

You get "track accustomed". You are not meant to go onto the track by yourself until you are 18 (also the earliest age that you can hold a safety critical licence). It's just a simple way that they have reported it.
There were only 6 apprentices in my group, don't know how many applied. Many go out as Service Operators and some as Station Supervisors now though.
