The sorry saga of the Edinborough tram schemes goes on. The Project has been beset by delays and financial problems. The programes is now very behind schedule and way over budget. Edinborough council are now drawing up plans to borrow another £55 Million to keep the project going. It is estimated that the final costs could be over £1 Billion. Over double the original costs and the project could be upto 2 year behind schedule
If yet another example was needed this is it. Trams are not a viable option in the UK. I think though a distinction needs to be drawn between trams and light railways. Where old railway lines are available a ligh railway scheme might be viable but trams as such are not.
Just think what improvements could be made to public transport with £1 Billlion.
The other thing with trams is they make huge losses that absorb public funds

What ever happened to the pionering and can do attitude of the England of old? As for what improvements could be made, well quite simple, a light rail/tram system that will serve Edinbugh for some time. Pity other parts of the country, London in particular aren't doing the same.

Of the few tram systems put in most have not met the anticipated passengers levels. All over run costs by about 4 times and all make a loss. Those that are most succesfull are not true trams but light railways. Trolleybuses are probably the way forward. All the advatages of trams plus non of the disadvantages and they cost a fraction of the cost of trams
