Only half the promised number of new Routemaster buses - four instead of eight - will be operating by the end of the month. Doubts also emerged today of the pledge by Boris Johnson to have 600 of the three-door, rear-platform, driver and conductor buses on London streets by 2016. The Routemaster, labelled by the Mayor as "stunning" and "tailored to the London passenger" was to have begun service last year, this was delayed until February. Transport for London (TfL) pledged there would be eight in service on route 38 - between Victoria Station and Hackney - by the end of May, this Thursday. The fourth bus was only delivered this week. TfL was unable to say when the next bus - number five - would arrive but it would be in the "coming weeks." The first eight will cost a £11.37 million though future vehicles are estimated at £315,000 a time. A conventional double decker costs about £190,000. The new bus has been described as a "vanity project" for the Mayor. www.thisislondon.co.uk/news/transport/new-routemaster-buses-due-in-operation-but-guess-what--half-of-them-will-be-late-7799739.htmlI dont like the way how the media describes the bus because of the design. Well i think its the problem due to the Wightbus making the buses and trying to get the bus all tested and ready for service on route 38. But remember the bus is worth gold so that's why it needs to be taken good care of. I dont blame Boris for the promise, its the behind the scenes which were making the delays.

To me and many others it is a waste of money and was not needed, and it does not actually do what borris or tfl or who ever had this stupid idea for a bus as it is over weight and can't by law hold 87 passengers as it would be to heavy, an E400H on the other hand is 1 cheaper 2 more available 3 more reliable as the technology has had time to be tested 4 LOOK'S GOOD 5 is nice and cool in the summer 6 Was not a complete waste of money as the bus had a niche to fill 7 Can actually hold 87 passengers as it is not overweight

Lets remember these are prototypes not production examples, and they are being worked as testing in public. 1 cheaper - Lets remember that the cost of each bus will come down as more are put into service. 2 more available - I would imagine NB4L production will be qick to set up - I would have thought most of the tooling and jigs can be reused from constructing the protypes. Then it should be the same as the wait for any other bus from the factory. 3 more reliable as the technology has had time to be tested - Again, these buses are prototypes and so are being tested now, as well as all of the testing done thus far. Even the ADL product had to have testing, so with a new product you have to give it time. 4 LOOK'S GOOD - That is a matter of opinion - you like the E400, I do not. I like the styling of the NB4L, you do not. 5 is nice and cool in the summer - Its that prototype word again! I am sure these 'teething' issues will be sorted and then we will have nice cool NB4L 6 Was not a complete waste of money as the bus had a niche to fill - History has shown that the best buses for London were those it had built to its own specifications and needs, not off the shelf examples. As a London Tax payer and user of public transport I have no problem with pay more for a better quality product that is better designed and built and so will be more relaible and have a longer life. Your same argument could have been applied to the RT and RM which were more expensive at their time of contruction than normal 'standard' products from the manufacturers. 7 Can actually hold 87 passengers as it is not overweight - PROTOTYPES - I am sure this issue can be overcome etc as the production model nears production.
