Having been a regular user of the 178 since last summer, the route definitely needs longer single decker or double decker on the school journeys. A lot of time I have stood at shooters hill road , and had buses pass the stop where they are full up especially if it is a hybrid bus. The transfer of the single decker from the 372 to the 178 would be greatly appreciated. Something has to be done about this route, as it's the only one that gives a traffic free connection to the national rail Kidbrooke station from the traffic queues of blackheath. The darts on the 178 & P4 are getting tired, P4 needs double Deckers. I think the 178 needs 12m buses, double Deckers is a bit too much as the route carries thin air off peak. A School Journey using a double decker would be greatly appreciated.

A School Journey using a double decker would be greatly appreciated. I've often thought there's not much value in using full-sized single deckers over double-decks. The cost probably isn't much cheaper than double-decking but there's not a massive increase in the amount of seating. I did wonder why they're used on the 293 - unless there's a resident issue I suppose. The 203 and obvious choices like the 227, 358, H37 I can understand. I think they'd also be a good idea if possible on the 108 and 214.

Double decking the two school journeys at 7.30 and 7.40 from woolwich would sort it out .

Indeed it's not possible to pick buses from thin air, it's just my thought on trying to resolve overcrowding .

As ever, where are these deckers going to come from and what are you going to do with them, and potentially their drivers, for the rest of the day? Journeys like that often have such a high cost per mile it's often more efficient to double-deck the whole route, hence why the 353 and 405 were double decked I'm an advocate of just not bothering unless these journeys can be cleverly woven into another route's regular scheduling. Doable with some routes, otherwise we have to have some people lose out. Unfortunate fact of life!

When PD get their new buses perhaps the redundant ALX Tridents could be moved to TL for the 178 and P4?

When PD get their new buses perhaps the redundant ALX Tridents could be moved to TL for the 178 and P4? That won't happen as 122's Tridents are being withdrawn and 472's Tridents are going off-lease.

Wait, would double-deckers even work on the P4 route? Aren't the roads too small in Brockley and Forest Hill?

When PD get their new buses perhaps the redundant ALX Tridents could be moved to TL for the 178 and P4? As much as I would love that to happen (I suffered many years of major overcrowding on the P4 in the peaks) until the issues on Red Post Hill that prevented deckers from going on the 42 are resolved I doubt we'll see any deckers on there. Wait, would double-deckers even work on the P4 route? Aren't the roads too small in Brockley and Forest Hill? The roads in Brockley are fine, certainly - the 522 went down Brockley Grove as have various diverted routes in the past. Doubt Forest Hill is a problem either. The biggest problem would be Red Post Hill where there's low trees that can't be cut (due to it being in a conservation area). I think a Trident did once work the P4 in the past, I'm kicking myself I missed it happening. They may be another section that's problematic after seeing the routing of the 3's current diversion. It runs with the P4 from North Dulwich but then heads off along Turney Road & Burbage Road, missing the section of Dulwich Village where the shops are located before rejoining the P4 at the roundabout - makes me wonder whether snooty Dulwich Village residents would block a double deck conversion. I'd divert the P4 via Burbage Road & Turney Road to annoy them lol.

Is not the railway bridge at Loughborough junction too low for double deckers on the road the p4 uses ?

Is not the railway bridge at Loughborough junction too low for double deckers on the road the p4 uses ? The bridge on Herne Hill Road is high enough for deckers to pass under - a good comparison is situated on Padfield Road (the road next to the bridge). The only low bridges at Loughborough Junction are on Padfield Road, Hinton Road & Loughborough Road.

An interesting article in this week's Mercury (can't find it online sadly). Apparently there was a further public meeting about the changes to the 178 and B16 last week. There is still pressure to reroute the 178 but the bit that caught my eye was: 'Andi Cooper told The Mercury "We heard last night that subject to consultation the B16 route around Kidbrooke Village to serve the Page Estate will be restored by May." And here's the consultation consultations.tfl.gov.uk/buses/route-b16Not quite what I was expecting...
