Seeing as we were having this discussion on the Stagecoach thread, I thought it better to talk about it on its own thread...
How do people feel about the resurrection of traditional-ish white on black bus blinds? I'm all for it, I do feel they look better than yellow, and particularly faded, badly kept yellow...

We already have white on black on the 34's DLA's.. oh wait, they're supposed to be yellow.. ;D I think the white on black will look good with the LED backlit blinds, Although I'd prefer us fo move to LED's like the rest of the UK, I must admit the blind material and the methods to light it has improved from 1991 when we last had white on black

I'm not really bothered about the colour either way.
The actual issues on blinds are keeping the blind glass clean both sides, making sure the lights behind blinds actually work and switch on when passengers need the extra illumination to read the blind details. The other issue is that regardless of the colour of the lettering blinds get dirty and fade. Different bus designs cause some of the problems in the first place. I'd much prefer that TfL allowed operators a small bit of money in the bids, where buses are going to be route bound for the contract term, to allow a blind refresh or replacement. This all really just basic maintenance which all garages and operators should be doing but there is clearly some divergence in practice.
This has to be cheaper than yet more tinkering with standards and a multi year. grindingly slow programme of replacement. At some point TfL will come under pressure to "get the job finished" which means money will be thrown at this issue.
The other aspect that I have not heard about yet is whether the white and black blinds have been through "testing" with the relevant stakeholder groups. It is only a matter of time before this become "political" and someone decides yellow is better for people with poor eyesight than white. Then it'll be Mayor's Questions and all the rest of it. Let's hope there has been full consultation and "testing".

I like the day glow blinds though, I mean grew up with them.

snoggle, the Optare Versas and Wright Streetlite arent the best when it comes to reading blinds due to the way the glass is shaped, light reflects badly. Operators should clean the glass and check the blinds more frequently. Though LEDs would be better, IMHO Sent from my GT-I9100 using proboards

I am all for white on black blinds, they seriously look good especially after seeing seeing them on the 34s DLAs

I understand about the Streetlites front blind but I don't understand about the Versa's blinds.

I agree with this Change. Most blinds seems to fade to White anyways. I wonder what took TFL so long!!!

It might just be me, but I'm sure that with blinds that have been produced over the last decade, the yellow pigment has faded faster. I'll use UX as an example, some of the blindsets on their TN's are barely 2 years old and some are already starting to go to that manky yellow/white colour. Blindsets from the 90's/early 00's seemed to retain their 'colour' longer. The A10 vehicles; L1, 3 & 5 (DMP42401, 42403 & 42405) kept their original blinds from 1996 till withdrawal in 2008 and it was only in their final 2 years that the last remains of yellow finally faded. Saying all that, it'll certainly look weird (at first) seeing all these modern vehicle types running round with white on black blinds. I expect we'll see 'hybrids' eg, vehicles with both yellow and white on black.

The blinds on the Route 203 MCL's were noticeably faded by about 10 months old (destinations for the 203 and especially the front number). You can see it on the H98 buses too, which are approaching their second birthday. Meanwhile on the 5-year-old SP16-22 it is very difficult to see the Route 482 blinds during the day if the lights aren't switched on. Still got another couple of years on that contract.

I saw a pic of one of Quality Line's new Versas and it was a little hard to read the blind, but that could have been sunlight or how the pic was taken... but with proper illumination it should be fine. I still think we're wasting time with vinyls and should move on... I had no problem reading Spirit of London's LED blind when it was first on the road... I wonder when that bus will be fixed?

To be honest I'm glad they've decided to bring back the white on black. As a few of you have already pointed out the yellow ones ultimately fade anyway so in returning to white on black it just cuts out the middle man in my opinion.

I'm surprised that white on black is DDA compliant given that for those with disabilities, impairments and barriers to understanding the contrast between white and black is fundamentally the most difficult to read.

I can't suppose for a minute that TfL would have gone through with it without consulting disability groups on the issue
