Sorry but the idiot is ranting at different ethnic people, not the bus Mredd made a good point, it's extremely hard to patrol every single bus just to see if an pathetic excuse for a human being starts a racial tirade. People need to report these incidents and then the law needs to take a seriously dim view on the matter and hand out proper punishments.

Most TfL buses do have appropriate security measures on board in the form of radio, alarms and CCTV. However I am not aware that a "racist lunatic" detector has yet been developed that can detect people liable to shout and rant when they get on the bus. I have read the article and I do not know what the author actually expects TfL to do. Staff are not required to put themselves in a place of danger by tackling people who might become or are violent. Therefore putting more staff on the buses would not solve the issue. Crew operated services had far worse levels of staff assault because the conductors got thumped for asking for fares and to see tickets. The issue of racism is a societal one and has existed for centuries. I am not excusing it but until people can get past long engrained as well as recently instilled prejudices then this is not going to stop. The "all Muslims are terrorists" angle is, of course, relatively recent and has been nicely stoked up by the previous Labour (!) Government, the Police, Security forces and the Media. No wonder people somehow feel "justified" in their rantings given all this subtle encouragement about a "climate of terror". I feel sorry for any passengers who have to put up with racist ranting on the bus or the tube but it is a police matter. The wider question in the article is why the police did not turn up - it was Finsbury Park after all, not exactly the most calm and serene place in the Capital. This also rather begs the question about what happens when police numbers fall under the Mayor's proposals and police stations close making response times worse.

People sound incredulous when (as a white male) I tell people I've been racially abused at work....the very minor instance is the old. "it's coz I's black" brigade....I normally just reply no it's coz u's scum ;D then again diplomacy has never been a strong point

When people invoke race, they will create more division. Including likes of Anjem Choudary which is a state agent who provokes their thing to end up making people more angry.

Call me old fashioned, but I believe the bus driver is a person to be respected and as such, should also behave in a manner which commands respect. Very few people will get on a bus with the sole intention of winding the driver up, though that may be a by-product of trying to blag a free ride or some other idiotic action.
Personally, I would not tolerate racist rants on one of my buses. I have been known to tell passengers to cease various forms of undesirable conduct in such a way that is assertive, but neither offensively confrontational nor would cause me to be seen as a shrinking violet. There are some people I will refuse to carry, such as those who have been smoking on the bus or engaging in violent conduct and I have not hesitated to request they get off.

How many staff on each bus and who is going to pay for it? Clearly this is just a nutter and the driver should have stopped the bus and called police.
