Something happend today which made me embarassed to be a bus driver.
Got taken to queens hospital to start my shift, I had about 20 minutes before I started and thought i'd grab a coffee.
As I was walking of the bus that gave me a lift and heading towards the entrance of the hospital, a young girl(20ish) was waiting at the stop with her fella. All of a sudden the girl collapesed in a heap on the floor and her fella was proper panicing. I went over and ask if he needed any help and he said yes please. The girl was shaking and spasaming, I ask the fella if she had taken any drugs and he said no. There was a NTC at the stand and I asked him to call an ambulance, the NTC ran off into the hospital to get help. By now the girl was being sick and her fella was crying and really really panicing, I did my best to calm him down and re assure him.
This next bit is the bit that made be ashamed to be a bus driver.
A bus pulled up at the stop where the girl was collapsed, and the driver got out of the cab and walked towards me, I thought to offer help. I asked him to do a code red and call for an ambulance, his reply?
"I can't do that, I need the toilet". He then walked off, FFS!!!!!!!!!
I jumped in his bus and did the code red myself.
He then came back from the toilet and drove off, what a complete w*nker!!!!!!!
I stayed with the couple until the ambulance arrived, and the fella thanked me non stop.
This leads onto something else.
Like many drivers on here, ive done loads of CPC/BTEC. I can honestly say ive found it a complete waste of time. At my last BTEC I raised an issue with the instructor in front of the class; "why don't we have 8hrs a year of first aid training, at least it would be usefull". He just shrugged his shoulders.
Rant over.

I think you should report the driver for his inappropriate actions when it comes to emergency situations. You should go to his garage and file a complaint, even through theres evidence from CCTV which makes him more guilty. if i was in your shoes, i would have taken the action very seriously!
I personally think, first aid training should be done for some bus drivers so they know what to do in emergency situations
Well done mate, good samaritan.

I couldn't agree more that we should have some sort of first aid training. Lets face it, we work with the public every day and things like this are going to happen. Knowing what to do in such situations could make a world of difference. I think you should report the driver for his inappropriate actions when it comes to emergency situations. You should go to his garage and file a complaint, even through theres evidence from CCTV which makes him more guilty. if i was in your shoes, i would have taken the action very seriously! I personally think, first aid training should be done for some bus drivers so they know what to do in emergency situations Well done mate, good samaritan. Now while I agree that the other driver could have been slightly less selfish, I feel the need to step in here. The CCTV on the bus can ONLY be pulled if an offence is committed, the bus is involved in an RTC or passenger injury or there's a (serious enough) public complaint. It can't be pulled at the drop of a hat.

I guess I've been somewhat lucky in that in four and a half years doing this job I've only had the need to request an ambulance twice. I've been more lucky in that on both occasions there was an off-duty nurse who was able to assist the person in need. That's not going to happen every time and I couldn't agree more that we should get some form of first aid training

What exactly are you going to report him for ? There's nothing to say he has to get involved and you don't know if there was a reason he didn't, like had to get finished and home urgently or something. It's very rare that ill get involved in situations now after I crashed my car on the a13 on ice and not a single person stopped to see if I was ok. And sometimes people worry that getting involved may mean details being needed and the police etc. if you've ever been on a bus that's been involved in an accident and you ask if anyone seen anything suddenly the whole bus becomes blind. That's if they haven't already walked off. I think you should report the driver for his inappropriate actions when it comes to emergency situations. You should go to his garage and file a complaint, even through theres evidence from CCTV which makes him more guilty. if i was in your shoes, i would have taken the action very seriously! In fact wouldn't TfL/First side with that driver for not getting out, Isn't there a rule over getting out of cabs and that? Sound's stupid but you know what TfL are like!!

Rant over. You did the right thing. You stayed with the Casualty. One thing I Learnt In Lifeguard training is to remain with a casualty and do not leave the area, you called for help and remained with them until the Ambulance arrived which was also the right thing

Convenient how whenever a witness is needed on a packed bus they've all suddenly disappeared!

Society is now becoming ignorant when it comes to situations like that now. I believe your right when it comes to people giving out their own details to someone when a situation occurs. Here is one video of it in a Tube Train. Edit: This is why everyone take care of themselves.

Chaz, he only needed the toilet, how long does it take to do a code red? 30 seconds? It's not as if I asked him to cook me dinner!

He was out of the cab, he was going to the toilet. There is no rule(that I am aware of) that states a driver cannot get out of his cab. Lets just say he had a hot date with cindy crawford, if a fellow driver asks for help, then, IMO, you help that driver. I am not for one minute saying i'm perfect, and yes, the passengers do drive me mad, but right is right, and if someone needs medical/police assistance, then a code red is called. Thank you for your comment swadbus. Any chance of a tour around centrecomm?........
