Two men were taken to hospital after a bus and a car were involved in a crash in Harold Hill.
Firefighters had to cut the roof off a Ford Fiesta to get to the man on the passenger side.
Four ambulance crews went to the scene and one man, thought to be 25, was taken by ambulance to Queen’s Hospital, Romford, with leg and back injuries.
The other patient, thought to be 23, was taken to the Royal London Hospital, Whitechapel, with head injuries.
The car had been in collision with a lamp post, and a number 499 bus travelling down Noak Hill Road was also involved in the smash.
Eyewitness Dave Jones, 37, had been visiting a friend nearby when he heard an “almighty bang”.
“There was all smoke pouring out of the bus, which was still running,” he said.
“People were gathering to help this one lad injured in the passenger side of the Fiesta.”
Harold Hill fire station watch manager Richard Harris said: “The car was badly damaged because it hit a lamp post and railings.

“We cut the roof off the car to release the passenger and with the help of ambulance staff put him on a spinal board so he could be taken to hospital.”
