Meanwhile up in Scotland... And I'm guessing that they're just gonna say it was an "accident".

ScotRail has a Decarbonisation Action Plan, which will see all diesel traction in Scotland eliminated by 2035. Although Scotland's railways are often characterised as single lines operating infrequent services through wild and remote areas, there is actually an extensive network of lines and frequent services in the populous Central Belt around the cities of Glasgow and Edinburgh. Currently 76% of all passenger journeys and 45% of freight journeys are already electrified; between 2014 and 2019 Scotland electrified a further 325km of its rail network. Diesel trains will be eliminated by further electrification - there are currently still considerable diesel operations which have a good economic case for electrification, such as the Fife Circle and the inter-city routes from Glasgow and Edinburgh to Dundee, Aberdeen and Inverness. On other routes the plan is to use hydrogen-powered trains and battery power. www.focustransport.org/2021/02/how-scotlands-railway-is-helping-to.html The Green Party In Scotland welcomes the Action Plan, although wants hydrogen to be produced from green renewable energy - hydrogen produced from fossil fuels such as North Sea Gas are not considered to be carbon-neutral. The Green party also wants Scotland's railways to be more visionary - as an example they propose a new high-speed route running north from Edinburgh via a nine-mile tunnel under the Firth of Forth, which would dramatically improve journey times between the Capital and three of Scotland's major cities: Dundee, Aberdeen and Inverness. The route could include a new low-level station at Leith which would plug Edinburgh's northern suburbs directly into the rail network. www.heraldscotland.com/news/19006124.greens-propose-tunnel-firth-forth-part-22bn-rail-revolution/

Scotland's railway is to be nationalised - the Scottish Government is to set up an arms-length management company to take over ScotRail services after Abellio's contract ends in March 2022. The contract will be terminated early amidst criticism over cancellations and performance levels (it was originally to run until 2025). The existing ScotRail livery and branding will remain unchanged and all ScotRail staff will transfer over to the new company. This follows on from the Wales and Borders franchise, which was nationalised by the Welsh Government in February. www.focustransport.org/2021/03/scottish-rail-services-to-be.html

Abellio Scotrail, Switch Mobility (Optare) and Glasgow Citybus have joined forces to turn the Glasgow Inter-Station bus 398 over to electric operation for the duration of the COP26 summit. Switch Metrodecker YJ19 HVC and Metrocity YJ19 HUY have been given allover vinyls giving prominence to their all-electric credentials. The 398 service links the City's Central and Queen Street stations as well as Buchanan Bus Station, and the vehicles provide extra capacity during what is anticipated to be a busier period than usual. The vehicles are operated on loan by Glasgow Citybus, a subsidiary of West Coast Motors, which has the contract for the service. Metrodecker YJ19 HVC was originally purchased by Metroline for use on London route 134 (North Finchley-Tottenham Court Road Station) and carried fleetnumber OME2652. It was returned to Switch/Optare by agreement, following the cutback of the 134 to Warren Street Station and consequent PVR reduction. The vehicle is now used as a demonstrator. Scotrail is to abolish peak-time fares for a six month trial period, from a date yet to be announced (but after 1st April). Scotland's Deputy First Minister, John Swinney, made the statement in his 2023/2024 Budget Statement. The trail is aimed at making rail travel in Scotland more affordable and accessible. Scotrail has still to see passenger numbers recover to pre-covid levels, and whilst leisure travel has recovered strongly peak-time trains are far less busy than they used to be due to changes in working patterns. Unions and passenger groups have welcomed the trial as a way of coaxing passengers back onto the railway. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-63998198
