Just heard on the news that a tram has somehow managed to overturn, with emergency services on the scene as I speak. Hope everyone on board is ok There are reports of people trapped and injured in the incident at Sandilands, unconfirmed suggestions that driver took the curve too fast. found a link to bbc news article www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-37919658

Looking at the article, a CR4000 was involved. I'm suprised how a tram can overturn! Anyway, I wish those injured a speedy recovery.

Trams are reportedly running only between Wimbledon and Reeves Corner, why not East Croydon?
Sadly there are unconfirmed reports of fatalities.

BTP Statement:
We were called at 6.13am this morning to a tram derailment near to Sandilands tram stop at Croydon.
Officers, alongside colleagues from London Fire Brigade and London Ambulance Service remain at the scene. They are currently working to free people still trapped.
A number of people have been taken to hospital with injuries and sadly it looks as though there has been some loss of life.
It is too early for us to confirm numbers but we are working hard to assess the ongoing incident and we are continuing to focus on recovery efforts.
The Rail Accident Investigation Bureau is now investigating this incident and will work out how this tragic incident has occurred.
We are currently working to set up a number for relatives and friend to call, so will circulate that as soon as we can. In the meantime, anyone with concerns is asked to call 101.
Please avoid the area and check with Transport for London for any travel updates.

I am guessing it was easier to close East Croydon at the time to prevent overcrowding with potential travellers not realising what has happened further eastbound along the line. For those going westbound nearby buses like the 264, 407, 455, etc can take them to Reeves Corner* and to certain tram stops beyond along the Wimbledon branch. So sad to hear of the fatality reported and for those that are injured to have as prompt as possible a recovery, mentally as well as physically. * - this terminus would help to simplify the system for the time being

TfL status page says trams are now running fron East Croydon westwards. Also short sections Addington Village - New Addington and Harrington Rd - Beckenham Junction.
The BBC site has some photos showing the tram completely on its side. This sounds like a horrendous incident and unlike anything I've ever heard of affecting a tram system / line. It's not a good day for public transport's reputation for safety.

Having seen an overhead picture on the railforums ... it has not just toppled, it has slid on its side a good few metres. I shall refrain from any further comment on this matter

It's not a good day for public transport's reputation for safety. I genuinely thought I'd misheard the radio earlier this morning in the car and had to wait for the next bulletin. I can't get my head around how one of those things could totally topple over. As you say, absolutely horrendous for those involved and, sadly, tragic for those who have lost loved ones

You just don't expect something like this on Tramlink. I suspect the sharp curve and poor rail conditions were the significance factor? Sadly five fatalities have been confirmed.

I hope the survivors are given all the help they need to recover, and condolences to families of those who passed.

The casualty figure is horrendously high. I see the driver has been arrested. The laws are almost identical to driving. Very very sad day.

The tram involved looks to be 2531, from aerial images, although I could be wrong. Condolences go to the families of the 5 that died in this awful disaster ðŸ˜ðŸ˜

Although I don't work for TfL any more a former colleague of mine now works for Tramlink. I met him again at the open day at Therapia Lane a few months ago. I can't imagine what he and the other people there are going through with this. In some respects this is giving me the same horrible "foreboding" feeling that hit LU in the wake of the Kings Cross fire. I'll never forget that day nor when we had the 7/7 bombings. The BBC are saying 5 people are dead which is just horrible.
