According to December Modern Railways, A number of D stock trains have been presold to Vivarail (a company set up last year, backed by various railway engineering chaps, and with funding coming from the Railroad Development Corporation of Pittsburgh
They are buying 150 Driving motor coaches and intermediate cars to make 75 units. Each Driving car will be fitted with two 200HP car diesel engines to power alternators, which with new AC control gear will operate the existing motors.
The trains will be refurbished (some doors may be converted to windows) and intention is to use them as 60mph replacements for Pacers in Northern England. It is seen as a low cost solution to replacing the Pacers, as D stock is not yet life expired for lighter use. The D stock is also already authorised to run on Network rail tracks (as it goes to Richmond & Wimbledon) which mitigates any new stock acceptance risk.

It's great when old tube stock find life after LU service. Sadly too late for the majority of A, C, 67, 72 (MK2), 83 and 86 stocks. Okay, maybe not the C Stock... Anyway, I can't wait to see the D stock transform into 'proppa' trains! I for one will greatly miss them.

Two 86 stock cars are at paster's new on the roof of a building on Great Eastern Avenue, Shoreditch.

I think you might be getting a little confused! 1983 stock was that which ran on the Jubilee Line and can be found on the roof at Shoreditch. After initial delivery of the 1983 stock, a further 15 trains of 1983 stock were ordered due to an increase in passenger numbers - these were delivered in 1986. When you mention 1986 stock looking like the Central 1992 stock, I think you are referring to the 3 experimental 1986 stock trains which were used on the Jubilee Line. I think I have it correct.

Thanks for the clarification. I did get confused as I remember the line getting more stock in 1986 never realize they were still referred to as 83 stock.

Anything that gets rid of the appalling Pacers is good news

Well, that's a turn up for the books.
The TS86 was an experimental "next generation" train of six cars with 2 each of different designs from different manufacturers. If memory serves me well, they ran for 2 years mainly used as spares for the unreliable 83s until they met a sticky end in a derailment at Neasden Depot.

Pacers are basically a 1980s low cost diesel train series (Class 140/141/142/143/144); with much of their design and components inspired/coming from buses at the time. Hence the bench seats (which are still present on the unrefurbished/not-so extensively refurbished units), inward opening doors, seating layout much like the top deck of a DD... They are what we would call 'high floor' trains- not wheelchair-friendly...which is part of the reason the D Stock is off to replace them! Lovely trains I hear.

Weren't they based on the Leyland Nationals?

Weren't they based on the Leyland Nationals? The 141/142s were, but not the 143/144's (they were based on a different bus type).
