What design do prefer? M.C.W's or Leyland's product.

It's the Titan for me all day long. I remember the comparative trials on the 51 - I was able to try both and I found the ride quality on the Titan to be far superior. I was delighted when Selkent got Titans rather than Metrobuses. From a passenger perspective, they were a joy to ride on.

Ive driven both. The titan wins for comfort but for relibility it has to be M for me. Living in sarf london it was what i cut my teeth on. Pure delight to drive, no bells or whistles just rugged simple reliable.

Design wise Titan but I think metrobus's sound better. If you put the Oly in there then that is my number one for everything.

I wasnt a huge L fan in the drive department. I didnt like the entrance doors on them. It restricted your left hand view when pulling out. Only the first 3 didnt have that blind spot. Looks wise the L was seriously pretty.

For me it's the Metros, esp Cummin engined batch M1084-1105. I remember the first time hearing one of them on the 118 and thought that it had a dodgy exhaust... till i heard more Ms sounding that way. In terms of engine sounds those Ms were the 'old shape euro6 E40H' of the day. M1104 was unbelievably fast with her suped up L10 engine, putting ANY past and present low floor double deck to shame.
The only downside to the breed were the brakes, which took getting use to with its sharp retarder... often giving the driver and passengers a jerky deceleration. The brakes were none too clever in the rain either and you would pray you never have to do an emergency stop in the rain. Even if you put on the handbrake at low speed those Ms will stop when it feels like it. lol
Although i like the Cummin examples the Gardner engined ones were just as lovely to hear, and which i i'm glad i was able to drive, M265 being my first service red double decker bus. Also love the kickdown and the three speed transmission, which is probably why i favour the Voith gearbox today on modern double deckers. Love the whining from the axle as well, especially at high speed.
As mentioned earlier i love how the drivers were able to silence the bells by clicking the fuse switch, which unfortunately also knocked out the speedo. LOL
Moving on to the Titans, don't really know much about them in terms of driveability but i found them generally ok. Much prefer the Metros though.

Metros, hands down. Titans were fine buses in their own right but just didn't pique my interest. But I grew up deep in Leaside/London Northern territory so I have a clear bias to declare.

Titans were probably the better looking but the metrobus was so solid, reliably and had that great engine and gearbox noise. I remember M967 turning up in its first day in service at AV in the 111 to take me to school and it was perfect.

Growing up in Brixton, I was lucky as I had the chance to ride both types as well as the Olympians and that's why I can't pick between all three. Everything about them were excellent:
The Gardener engines on all three were loud and beasty, The Voith box on the M's was tuneful whilst the gearboxes on the T's and L's would always leave you wondering what kind of sounds you'll hear The 1980's interiors they had are the best interiors IMO and should be brought back for all buses I loved the reversing mirror on the rear window of the Titans - was fun watching the scenery through it And much more, I really could go on lol.
