Pointless idea, even when I told people there were seats upstairs, no one took any notice. A complete waste of money.......................... On Certain Bus Routes where people are only travelling a few stops on a rammed packed full up double deck bus, many refuse to go upstairs and take a seat for a few stops and those who actually want to get on the bus have to wait for the next one. A lot of people only have consideration for themselves on packed buses. I do not see the point of this to be honest, will be ignored just like blinds are. If displaying 0 Seats available people will still go up the stairs and take a look then come back down again. To be honest I think it would be better if this info is displayed on the Drivers CCTV Screen than as Passenger Info, this may help drivers on very busy routes. I no longer attempt to board rammed buses, no one should be standing past the drivers cab as this may obstruct mirrors and I see this happen daily, now I know why certain drivers stop in odd places at bus stops at busy times, well to prevent less crowd at the doors! Just a thought if drivers had this info they may be able to prevent allowing too many people to board as no one should be standing ahead of the cab door!

I myself have been on buses why drivers tell us to go upstairs when it honestly is jam packed up there. Especially if you are only travelling a few stops the last thing you need is to be trapped on the stairs.

Perhaps in the future thermal imaging cameras could be used.

Sorry but I think too many people unnecessarily board buses for very short distances, taking buses 3 Stops when it is a 5 Minute walk, waste of capacity on a bus when someone travelling further may require it more at a busy time (Understandable if people are elderly and carrying a lot of shopping). The worst I have seen is people boarding a 136 or 181 from Grove Park to Downham Way (Northover) which is a 4 Minute walk and surprisingly a lot of people do this and is hardly travelling at all!

Well it's a bit of a quandry isn't it? If you give people reasonably frequent services, put up real time arrivals info at stops, have a lowish flat fare and also have a ticketing system where nearly all the residents have a smart or bank card in their pocket then you are going to encourage people to short hop rather than walk. I agree a lot of people could walk short distances but not everyone can. There is also the risk of misjudging that people taking a short trip are just doing that short leg - it may well be part of a much longer overall journey involving multiple changes. If you make short hop trips unattractive then you run the risk of lowering the revenue base for the network which means cuts to services which then makes buses less attractive to longer distance travellers. Teaching people to be more considerate in using double deck buses at busy times might be a start.

The worst I have seen is people boarding a 136 or 181 from Grove Park to Downham Way (Northover) which is a 4 Minute walk and surprisingly a lot of people do this and is hardly travelling at all! Depends on where those 3-stop distances are. Where I live in Southall it is a 14 minute walk in one direction and a 18 minute walk in the other for three stops, although I don't often make those particular journeys. Near my uni it is: 18 minutes for the 101/262/366 towards Gallions Reach Shopping Park 15 minutes for the 474 towards North Woolwich, soon to drop to 10 when a new stop opens 11 minutes for the 262 towards Stratford 9 minutes for the 101/366/474 via Cyprus Station, this one because of a short-cut only available for pedestrians. With Gallions Reach Shopping Park, if I walked both ways instead of taking an empty bus, it would almost-triple the length of time it takes me to do my shopping, likewise with the 101/262/366/474 in the opposite direction, where it is about the same to get to Beckton Asda. The 9 minutes to Cyprus Station, it is the distance from one end of the campus to the other, but I rarely take the bus for it, especially as it involves almost as much walking when you get to/from the bus stop on both sides! Then there is the thought that you might as well use the bus if you've got a season ticket, which technically is costing you if you haven't reached the equivalent cap for the day , otherwise if you've reached the PAYG cap for the day (or will reach it) it isn't costing you extra to use the bus.

This type of technology will never work on busy bus routes - The mad scrum at Walthamstow Central for the 69 for one - can you imagine people pausing to look at the screen as they board

This type of technology will never work on busy bus routes - The mad scrum at Walthamstow Central for the 69 for one - can you imagine people pausing to look at the screen as they board The display is not hugely relevant at a starting stop where buses will be empty. Yes the 69 is very busy but it's rare for one to leave completely full from the first stop at WWCS. I can see it being worthwhile at the Bakers Arms or Leyton Tube where seats might well be scarce. Buses running through the Central, like the 97, are often well loaded so a display would be helpful there. While I understand people's moans about people taking no notice, the technology not working, announcements being cheaper etc we need to consider that TfL often trial stuff that is the vanguard of technology. Would we have as many low floor buses or hybrid buses if TfL had not been brave enough to take the first versions of those innovations? Similar comments apply to I-Bus and releasing the info so app developers can provide useful bus info apps. Doing a full route pilot of the technology is not going to "waste" too much money. Having a larger sample of data and users will be valuable for TfL so it can determine if a wider roll out is justified or not. We know from recent PVR changes that the 59 is extremely busy and probably at capacity in the peaks at several places along its route. Being able to ensure buses are genuinely full may help with crowding / people being left behind.

All computer controlled systems have the ability to fail so nothing is ever 100% accurate but from what I've seen of it through videos and pics of people using it, it works. Don't take what I've said out of perspective. I'm simply sceptical of the reliability of the cameras to power this feature. I've just seen a video of it in action, and it recognised a bag as a person so... I acknowledge that and have no issue with it - I'm just stating, like yourself, what I've seen.
