I remember the old Plumstead garage (the one on the corner of Wickham Lane and King's Highway), with DMS and RM, then all Metropolitans. And Abbey Wood, another very small garage, which I remember once again with RM, DMS and MD. Sidcup garage always had interesting vehicles, plenty of generally well looked after RMs, the first Titans in the area along with Metrobuses, most rare in South East London. The offices are still standing, even if the main garage isn't. In the country area, I remember both the original Dartford garage and Swanley garage, which still stands. Swanley indeed would make a lovely heritage bus depot. Now, if I win the lottery...

I knew about the old V (Turnham Green) (which is now a Sainsbury's), the old R (Hammersmith-Riverside) (which is now a shopping centre) and the old M (Mortlake) (which is now housing and a bus stand). Chiswick Works became Chiswick Business Park, and it's fitting that public buses actually serve the site now (with the 27 based at V (Stamford Brook)). Except for the former R with the garage frontage) and the fact Mortlake Avondale Road is a bus stand, there is no visible thing that shows it used to be related to London Transport. I use the Sainsbury's at Chiswick regularly, and use Chiswick Business Park as part of a cut-through walking path to Acton Town when the District line messes up, and I have seen no sign of the former heritage. The northern bridge under the Picc/Dist to Chiswick Business Park has clearance for a double decker (surely) as a northern entrance to Chiswick Works (I assume). In more recent times, I remember ECT ran the 195 from Greenford Garage. I remember using the 195 to go to school with ECT, and I have always found it puzzling as to why it ended up with First Centrewest under a temporary contract. I never knew why, my only thought is that ECT just wanted to pull out of TfL tendered work for some reason. Chiswick Sainsbury is not actually on the site of the former Turnham Green garage(V), although it is close by. If you turn from Chiswick High Road on to Belmont Road, you will turn left for Sainsbury's. If you stay on Belmont Road you will see directly ahead of you a newish housing development, the first bit of which forms a u shape on a corner. That development marks the start of the old V garage. If you carry on Belmont Road with the development on your left then you will be passing where the entrances were situated. It was a rather cramped site on a triangular piece of land hemmed in by the railway to the north.

Made many visits to now closed garages in the 1980s & 1990s, GM was a favourite, I went to an open day at EM as s kid, such a shame that so many garages were lost.

Anyone going to throw up Sidcup (SP)!? Used to be the home of some lovely Titans running the proper length of route 21 before it closed.

AE was Hendon LT garage and X was Middle Row LT garage these were the original garages from LT days allocation codes have been reused so the AE & X you mention are not the garages being mentioned another example is CT this was the original H garage As AE was the code for Hendon I have never been able to forgive Arriva for using this code for Ash Grove. This garage started out as AG in 1981, and Arriva for a while named it CH - for Cambridge Heath - so I feel they ought to have used one of these codes instead. Other closed garages I can think of are PR, AP, CF and FY. I underatand the small bus station at North Finchley may be on the site of FY. The story of AK is one of the more wasteful in London history. It was closed in 1984, demolished for rebuilding, reopened in 1987 and closed again in 1992, still in LBL ownership. So much for the government at the time taking control of London Transport from the GLC as operating costs were allegedly so high in GLC days!

I'm sure I remember as a kid the Titans on the 87 being at CH (Chadwell Heath) if there was a garage there? l1group ECT ran into financial trouble and First took over thr 195 to rescue them... I think for a while they used some of their Caetano's or absorbed them into their fleet

What happened regarding Chadwell Heath was that LBL planned a "super garage" there to replace AP, BK and NS. In anticipation of this, some buses received CH codes. Then these proposals were shelved, I think planning permission was denied due to the land being contaminated. Instead, just AP closed and BK & NS were reprieved. My first Titan ride was on route 87, which I believe was the longest continuously Titan-worked route, from 1980-2001.

The problem with AK was as far as I'm aware, it had subsidence issues so I'm guessing it wasn't worth the money to repair it.

It was on a site between Rosemont Ave., and Christchurch Ave, of off Ballards lane. Site is now a Homebase

The problem with AK was as far as I'm aware, it had subsidence issues so I'm guessing it wasn't worth the money to repair it. The most plausible story I have heard about AK is that when the garage was rebuilt in the 80's it was enlarged over an area of a former bomb crater that hadn't been backfilled properly and this caused the garage to start sinking. It also had a basement that was meant to be able to cater for Midibuses the same as GM but this ended up as a car park as the planner hadn't accounted for some 'tween floors piping that essentially reduced roof height below the minimum required. All in all the new AK was a bit of a disaster and the subsidence problem was quite costly. This, obviously, stopped once it shut and you didn't have a hundred or so 10 ton buses parked in it! Moz

Both [CT] and [H] operated at the same time. Clapton [CT] was originally also called Hackney but for trams then trolley buses. When it went motor bus (diesel) it then was given the name Clapton [CT] to avoid being confused with nearby Hackney [H] which was on Well Street. The [H] that was on Well Street was demolished in the 90's or early 2000's to make way for a Lidl. I think after LT closure at a time it had house some ambulances, but not for long.
