I can’t believe they’re arguing over the position of where the guard should stand - seriously, when is transport chiefs & unions going to stop acting like schoolchildren & get issues sorted so that fed up passengers can actually use a decent level of train service that they get ripped off about. People are losing jobs over this and even having to move house in some cases just so they can get to work on time

If someone was to get injured or worse guess who will be held accountable?

If someone was to get injured or worse guess who will be held accountable? I agree with all that entirely but at the end of the day, it's the poor passengers who always pay the price for it both literally and figuratively so it be great if everyone could put agendas to one side and get it sorted. It's like they are never ever considered in the grand scheme of things

I can’t believe they’re arguing over the position of where the guard should stand - seriously, when is transport chiefs & unions going to stop acting like schoolchildren & get issues sorted so that fed up passengers can actually use a decent level of train service that they get ripped off about. People are losing jobs over this and even having to move house in some cases just so they can get to work on time Well it might have helped if Siemens and GTR / DfT and the train leasing company (ROSCO) had designed and delivered a train that worked within the constraints of the infrastructure. It's not rocket science. It's not as if the tunnels haven't been there for well over a century and they've had very little done to them in recent decades. I am not aware that trains are being cancelled on the GN Inners because of the 313s having to keep running. They may be in poor shape but that's a commercial decision taken by the DfT, GTR and ROSCO because they are near the end of their life. It's all very well for Grant Shapps to jump up and down like a lunatic and rant like a moron but he's a member of the government that directly controls the GTR franchise via the DfT. Oh hang on, the Transport Secretary isn't responsible for the railways nor for GTR now is he? People were losing jobs because of the government's insistence on pursuing operational cost savings on Southern and then failing to recognise that a massive timetabling and scheduling disaster was happening on their watch despite being told it *was* happening. Nothing to do with the provision of class 717 trains for the Moorgate line. It is perhaps noteworthy that since the Managing Director changed at GTR that there has been some quiet but solid progress in getting drivers trained for the new service pattern and that trains are now usually in the right place for service. It's not perfect and the Great Northern timetable still seems susceptible to disruption but there is not the monumental chaos of 4-5 months ago. I understand that Thameslink at London Bridge is now packed in the peaks taking people into the core. The next big thing is ensuring the May timetable comes in smoothly as this should add a few more Thameslink through services but more crucially restore the weekend timetable that's been severely cut back for nearly a year. Southern is also apparently running far better now as a result of more realistic timetables and breaking a lot of the old complex interworked schedules that made service recovery extremely difficult. I am afraid that having been involved in platform / train interface (PTI) issues, including a huge commercial dispute at LUL, for a long time I will always side with getting this stuff right rather than risking passengers' lives. It is even worse now given that drivers and guards are at risk of criminal prosecution following an incident on Merseyrail. It is not always easy to get a "quick fix" to these issues as every site is different, passenger behaviours can differ from minute to minute and all of this has to be taken into account in developing a workable solution. I don't actually see any intransigance from anyone - it's not as if ASLEF are threatening a strike or anything. They are helping get to a viable solution as are GTR and Network Rail. I agree it should have been prevented but it hasn't been so the alternative is to find a solution even if that means shelling out more cash to keep the 313s ticking over in the short term.

The first 2 717's are due to enter service on Monday Morning.
- The carriage working diagrams were placed in my pigeon hole at my depot yesterday afternoon, the timings below maybe subject to change as a result of any unit failure, service disruption or train crew unavailability. Two 717's will enter service every fortnight, but 313's will still be the dominant traction when the May timetable comes along. I must admit despite my love for the 313's, they're slowly dying and are being patched up literally.

Just by way of stating the obvious the first 717s entered proper passenger service today. Lots of social media commentary about the new trains. The short term fix for signal sighting issues on the tunnel section is a second member of staff in the cab. The signals will apparently be relocated to improve sighting lines in May this year.

I've seen a tweet seeing that the last 313 to run on Great Northern will be 8th April 2019. This marks the end of 43 years use on that route and also a very rapid deployment of the new class 717s.
Southern will still operate 313s on stopping West Coastway services out of Brighton.

Given there is still? only two diagrams current using 717's. Don't even think all drivers are trained on them yet.

Obviously lots of 6 car (2 unit) workings remain. The perils of speed reading a tweet.

Just to clarify, The last booked 3 car is Next Monday Morning, 2J42 08:28 Stevenage via Hertford North - London Moorgate. The service runs empty from Moorgate as 09+45 to Hornsey EMUD. Where it stables throughout the day, however on Monday afternoon HE56 becomes 717, and becomes the third 717 to enter service we're expecting another 2 more to enter before the end of April, but late Summer unfortunately all the 313's will disappear. 4 have been stood down already. 026 at hornsey, 043, 062 & 063 all at Hertford North carriage sidings.
