Good, it wasn't needed. All it was just for the cyclist brigade with their usual brownie points. Just like the Old St roundabout, now the cycle lanes are there, they hardly even use it, go figure! As I have previously mentioned, there needs to be four river crossings built east of Tower Bridge. It would only get worse with Sadtick Khans stupid ULEZ to North and South Circular Roads, They are not a proper boundary, the North Circular nearly touches the Greater London border at Woodford, while other locations east are way far from it, i.e at Beckton. At the current moment because of the ULEZ Tower Bridge is VERY busy all day. It was made worse some years ago with the congestion charge being on the boundary, now it has to contend with the ban on vans from Rotherhithe Tunnel and ULEZ, CC boundary. Dartford Crossing would be extremely busy after ULEZ expansion as people avoid paying for it.
Ya it was an expensive and unnecessary item like the garden bridge. Big waste of money benefitting no one - can easily be solved by extra ferries at a much lower cost Those extra river crossings are needed Really having a bridge on top of a railway line is a waste. River crossings east of Tower Bridge are certainly scarce but spending millions of pounds on a new one which isn't needed when the Jubilee Line is directly beneath is a nonesense. Creating unprecedented Thames crossings further east would be a better move rather than wasting millions on this luxury of a bridge. A crossing is a crossing and the Jubilee Line is better than no crossing so why not focus on places which do not have any crossing

Big waste of money benefitting no one - can easily be solved by extra ferries at a much lower cost Those extra river crossings are needed The bridge would’ve definitely benefitted people. There are a lot of new developments going up around Deptford, Surrey Quays, Canada Water and Rotherhithe. Trains heading into Canada Water are always overcrowded and the station itself is quite regularly closed due to the overcrowding too. I imagine the bridge would’ve least taken pressure off of the Jubilee Line. No bridges east of Tower Bridge are ever going to be built for the foreseeable and Silvertown Tunnel isn’t going to be ready anytime soon (which is a problem in itself due to it’s close proximity to Blackwall Tunnel), so personally I feel the bridge would have been great to have as an alternative.

What we need is a new road crossing between Blackwall Tunnel and the M25. This would open up more employment and business opportunities north and south of the river. To mitigate against excessive local traffic, it should be free and accessible for pedestrians, cyclists, public transport and electric vehicles, but with significant charges for petrol/diesel vehicles.
We’ve been fobbed off by a crap ferry service which seems less reliable than the one it replaced, closes due to weather and industrial action, and is only part time. We’re also getting the Silvertown tunnel which is literally right next to the Blackwall tunnel thus creating no new links and will result in Blackwall becoming tolled. The Dartford crossing has paid for itself many times over and should be free by now. Making it free would also help shift traffic away from residential areas along the A2.

This wasn’t even a road bridge which would have helped ease pressure on blackwall / rotherhithe tunnels - but seemed like another vanity project focused on cyclists. There was fairly stiff opposition on the local Canary Wharf FB group as plans for pedestrians were hazy at best. Things weren’t clear on the westferry side of things either ....

The new Silvertown tunnel is in the wrong place I think / too close to blackwall tunnel. I am already dreading the traffic gridlock .... would have been helpful to have one near thamesmead / barking riverside etc

It will be interesting to see where the extra traffic develops. Silvertown doesn’t go anywhere radically new and will cost motorists more money to do the same journey. I think there will be an increased flow of traffic along the A2 via Blackheath Hill. The A206 through Greenwich may also see increased through traffic. I think TfL should keep Blackwall Tunnel free to avoid shifting traffic to residential areas. I think the real reason why they don’t want to keep Blackwall Tunnel free is because it would become apparent that not many people would use the Silvertown tunnel (like the cable car crossing) and traffic would flow better if more evenly split between the two tunnels. only saving grace is that it will mean deckers can cross the Thames.

Everything's gone very quiet on the possibility of extending the railway from Barking Riverside (when built) under the river to connect with Crossrail and, perhaps more importantly, South Eastern trains and buses at Thamesmead. Of course, it would be so much better if this link was by Met Ham and City rather than the ever-constrained GOBLIN, but when was the last time a truly sensible decision was made with regard to public transport infrastructure in the Greater London area? Some years ago, I'd suggest.

It would also make it easier to do orbital journeys to West London without entering zone 1 - meaning cheaper cross London journeys. Crossrail and Thameslink will provide good access into much of East London, Kings Cross and East London. Having GOBLIN, Crossrail, Thameslink and SouthEastern services from Abbey Wood would be amazing. Shame our short sighted council favours a DLR link.

I can appreciate your point of view BUT, as I understand it, 4 tph is the maximum possible on GOBLIN with no feasible increase in train size. You'd get the same situation as when the DLR started: oversubscribed from day one with years to wait before a modest extension of train size happened. I'm not thinking of the direct journey opportunities: Barking is not a difficult place for interchange, and 'readers' on the platform could solve problems of fares. I'm here assuming that the current nonsense with offpeak Underground/Overground fares carries on!

That might be an issue as trains calling at Abbey Wood, Thamesmead and Barking Riverside may be full by the time they reach Barking!

Barking does have readers on the platforms, they're meant to be used by people interchanging from c2c onto Oyster services. I'd have preferred the H&C being extended myself but I don't think it could use the same track as the c2c as there's no third or fourth rail there. Any extension would have to be tunnelled and due to the lack of space around Barking due to quite big junctions on either side of it the line would need to duck into a tunnel before East Ham or right after it. Then you also have the issue that HS1 goes pretty much right under Barking then continues under the c2c line until it surfaces at Dagenham Dock.

Thanks for putting me in the picture as to the physical problems of extending the H&C: given the political/financial climate they really would put the mockers on it, I can see.

The Silvertown tunnel is a waste imo, too close to Blackwall tunnel. A bridge needs to be around Beckton/Woolwich area and at least one near Barking. There also needs to be a crossing further East into Essex, more likely a tunnel.

Shelving the Bridge was inevitable with tight constraints on TfL finances, the electric ferry idea sounds quite innovative and exciting but I can’t see it happening any time soon. Shaun Bailey’s idea to reallocate money from this bridge to Hammersmith Bridge for repairs is the first good idea that’s come out of his mouth, I think he probably views this crossing as a luxury Diamond geezers Blog has a really interesting article about this "New" ferry service that is going to be made seeing as there is already a ferry service doing that exact journey diamondgeezer.blogspot.com/search?updated-max=2019-06-24T01:00:00%2B01:00&m=1As for new crossings we definitely need a new road crossing of some time a bridge or something that goes oout from Beckton/Barking to Thamesmead it's long overdue ! And as for the New Woolwich Ferry everytime I've gone to use it on weekends it's been closed even tho tfl website claims it had been open what is the point ?
