I guess there's not much variation from Northern - after all Serco & Abellio used Northern as well - it would only mean another re-paint anyway and alternatives like 'Network North' would just sound naff... so easier to remove the "by Arriva" strapline... The current Northern livery and logo look pretty good anyway The 142 Pacers are gradually being removed as well, I assume the diesel 331's replace them along with other (less naff) trains like the 158's Still, not all bad news for Arriva - on the Overground, finally the 710's are very slowly entering service on West Anglia lines - replacing Class 317's and 315's

FYI the diesel 331s are 195s, and are indeed indirectly replacing the Pacers.

It was on BBC North West Tonight last night that the final Northern class 142 Pacer had just been withdrawn.
Northern now has quite an elegant fleet with a consistent livery. Most trains have blue seats but a handful still have purple or previous franchisee moquettes. Their "northern" logos are gradually being replaced by NORTHERN (in block capitals).

And then last year managed to catch direct a direct Virgin train from Euston which was nice not having to change to a packed train from Preston.

"About time" seems to be the common reaction although using the term 'operator of last resort' might not inspire confidence🤣. A lot of happy people on twitter...

So how many TOCs have now been nationalised? Four — LNER, Northern, Southeastern and now TPE. (Happy to be corrected)

Good riddance, First have been horrendous at running the TransPennine Express franchise. Even though some of the problems they've suffered haven't been their fault, such as the May 2018 timetable change which was caused by Network Rail not issuing the new timetable in good time and poor rail infrastructure in the north, their management have made some very poor decisions. Not least the decision to order three different fleets of new trains from two manufacturers when the Class 802's are cleared to go pretty much anywhere on their network apart from the South TPE route and have suffered far less faults than the Class 397's or Mark 5 sets have. And their handling of industrial relations was a major problem even before the pandemic. Whilst the OLR won't immediately improve things, they seem to have stabilised Northern which was suffering quite badly before they stepped in. Equally they could also make things worse as was evident with Southeastern's utterly shambolic December timetable change.
