Do you mean running light without carrying passengers? When the 85 was run out of Leatherhead garage I used to think there was a loss of fares, even if the journeys weren't timetabled. Back in LT days most routes either ran from more than one garage, and usually ran past it e.g. TH,AK and TC, or not far off the main route e.g. SW When I lived opposite SW, the last east bound 37 displayed "Clapham Common Station" and knowing it was garaged at SW, I used to stay on it 'til it pulled into the garage.

Do you mean running light without carrying passengers? Garage runs is basically keeping the bus in service between the route and the depot it comes from*. The garage run schedule would be on the driver's time cards and on the relevant bus stops flags. * - Eg. 44 to TOOTING STATION (& Merton Garage)

If there were any garage journeys in Brixton, I was too young to remember or know them. That said, the terminating routes in the 90's didn't run from BN, Q or SW so I doubt there was any - 2's from Crystal Palace terminated at Brixton during Monday to Saturday's and ran from N, 109 was from TH, 118 was BN, 250 was TH & P4 was TL.
Obviously today, you could run the 355 to Q & 432 to SW as garage journeys.

The 312 instead of having garage runs was extended from the Swan and Sugar Loaf to South Croydon Garage when the allocation was transferred from TH to TC.

A possible reason for buses running out of service from their booked terminus to the garage is 'insurance for the passenger'.
If a bus was off course not due to a necessary and authorised diversion and was involved in an accident, there could be issues.
I used to drive a Northern line train on a particular duty a few years back (before ATO) Southbound from Edgware to Hampstead out of service and then reverse, to stable at Golder Green depot. The train could have carried passengers due to all stops still being open 'en route' for Northbound trains to stop, and even though (signals allowing) trains didn't stop at any of the stations southbound, there was nothing stopping the train being in service.
Trains and buses operate very differently obviously, however, I'd imagine the principal is much the same.

In the days when fare tables were publicised on buses, garage journeys often had a separate fare scale.
