All 205 journeys between Mile End and Bow Church are effectively "garage journeys" - this extension wasn't in the tender specification but was offered by Stagecoach in their successful bid.

That was true of the 2009 contract (which was awarded to ELBG rather than Stagecoach). But from the 2014 contract onwards the route has been specified to terminate at Bow Church. The tender spec for 2014 can be viewed here. Of interest is that there was an NBFL option on that contract.

I believe that is the case with all bus routes, except for a few. I believe the ELT is an exception for obvious reasons. Would explain why certain ads might only show up with some operators. Quite a few Stagecoach buses have been sporting thank you NHS ads or NHS hero ads but I haven't seen this across any other operators.

Reason why I mentioned it as about a month ago, I was told unequivocally that TfL had all the advertising rights on London's buses.

279 used to have lots of Garage Journeys also back in the early 2000s infact I think all Journeys which started at Waltham Cross or Ended there ran in service to/from Ponders End Garage . 253 had garage journeys Edmonton which was way off route and 106 had Tottenham. Of course in old days buses worked out of garages at either end of route eg 106 Hackney (Well Street) and Barking .route ran from FPS as now to Becontree. Route 8 ran out of Old Ford and Willesden . Then of course it was just London Buses no Abellio or Metroline erc.and they had Inspectors at busy bus stops!! As Mary Hopkin sang Those were the Days..

According to www.londonbuses.co.uk the EM (Edmonton) allocation on the 253 did not operate garage journeys in service, but ran light to and from Stamford Hill. The EM allocation was only temporary, during the trolleybus conversion programme; it operated from 26th April until 10th October 1961 after which it was reallocated to its intended home, SF (Stamford Hill).

My hazy memory concurs with that, because I went looking for a garage journey in service nd couldn't find one. As interesting as the 106 in-service journeys to AR, imo, were those on little red RFs on the 236 to the same garage, operated through from Finsbury Park Station. Bet those were interesting on Spurs' match days!

The 51A was an interesting use of garage journeys, extending the Foots Cray short workings on the 51 in service to Swanley when the 233 didn't run on Sundays. It outlasted the second closure of SJ.
The Plumstead Station section of the 53 on Monday to Saturday stems from the introduction of a PD allocation (it already ran there on Sundays). The garage journeys eventually allowed the 291 to be diverted away from the lower end of Griffin Road while maintaining some level of service.
