They could avoid that by continuing to run the 42 along Sunray Avenue towards East Dulwich. That way, all that changes is buses go beyond the Red Post Hill area and that Sunray Avenue only loses a bus service in one direction rather than both as per TfL's proposal. But isn't it residents objections, and possibly trees as well, in Sunray Avenue that precludes double deckers? Wouldn't surprise if there were nimby residents moaning about it but I've no idea - certainly, trees have been cited as an issue but there was solutions to that problem apparently.

There's no issues with DD using Red Post Hill as the 37's are using it on a planned diversion this week due to resurfacing in Half Moon Lane.
I believe the 42 tender ITT was issued with the extension being a requirement.

We have a response! Let the vehicle speculation begin > The TfL Responses include following "Because the route will operate in the new Ultra Low Emission Zone, the buses that will operate on the route will be Euro 6 hybrid buses which are cleaner and quieter. We do not anticipate that there will be any issues in operating route 42 in both directions on Red Post Hill" so that eliminates quite a lot of the existing fleet, but a pain for any new Operator unless they can divert an existing order and backfill the route that was buses borrowed from

TfL are making cuts, I guess they started with proofreaders! 😂 I'm still not sure what a 'batterer' is, maybe it's TfL's way of cheekily describing their opinion of south Londoners! At least they get charged 😂

They will soon have surplus double deckers from the conversion of the 344 which could free up euro6 E40Hs* to the 42 from WL. To create space at that depot the 415 could be transfered to BC and/or transfer part of the N109 to WL, effectively creating overnight parking for the 42 allocation. Should the route be retained by Go-Ahead (probably likely) buses due for the 363 could be diverted to the 42, the 363 then getting hybrids from later deliveries. * - either the ones originally for the C3 or some of the 344's new MMCs (344 then having an adjusted ratio of standard and MMC E40Hs as it's a new and existing bus contract anyway)

With the 42 extended to Sainsbury's on Saturday, it appears the 42 will use the spare stand at East Dulwich Sainsbury's, go back around and then pick up passengers from the existing P13 bus stop.

To confuse matters more, there's also a spare bus stand on Dog Kennel Hill towards Denmark Hill opposite the park, which was installed a few months back.
