Three bidders selected to bid for the new West Midlands franchise, these include: London and West Midlands Railway Limited, a subsidiary of Govia Limited (a joint venture between Keolis and Go-Ahead Group) West Midlands Trains Limited, currently a wholly owned subsidiary of Abellio Transport Group Limited with Japan Railways East and Mitsui Corporation as minority partners; MTR Corporation (West Midlands) Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of MTR Corporation (UK) Limited. www.globalrailnews.com/2016/04/07/japanese-rail-operator-included-on-shortlist-for-west-midlands-franchise/More information can be found in the link provided.

That's interesting. I wonder why the pull out? Perhaps they realise they will definitely obtain the SWT franchise along with first and they don't particularly want so much in one go? Who knows.....

Exactly as you say - so they can concentrate on the joint bid with First for the South Western franchise. I doubt DfT are happy in having another franchise competition with only two bidders but there you go. Seems that the announcement for the Greater Anglia new franchise has gone back weeks because of "brexit" throwing all the economic assumptions in a tail spin meaning the risk around the franchise has increased and it's having to be reworked. No one will sign up to a deal where the underlying basis has changed fundamentally.

So who are the remaining bidders for the West Midlands franchise I've been living under a rock when it comes to that side of the network?

My last slave died of countless weybridge via Hounslow services. It happens to us all. I don't know which one of those I'd prefer.... Not a fan of either!

I wouldn't have thought that they would have only made that decision in order to solely focus on the SW franchise bid, quite a good reason or suggestion, MTR did bid for the West Midlands franchise before.

I wouldn't have thought that they would have only made that decision in order to solely focus on the SW franchise bid, quite a good reason or suggestion, MTR did bid for the West Midlands franchise before. That is what they said publicly so that's all we have to go on. MTR's competence is more focussed on urban / commuter / metro type operations and I can see why they would prefer to focus on SWT given the potential transfer out of suburban services to TfL and then later to Crossrail 2. There are strategic reasons for them to want to "see inside" the workings of SWT and its finances. Taking part in a bidding round now and possibly winning the operation of it puts them in a good position for a future takeover of the suburban services contract if TfL gain the right to run those services in a couple of years time. Remember there is supposed to be a "separation" clause in the next SWT franchise. The other aspect is that any franchise on the WCML is going to be the franchise from hell if construction of HS2 starts. How the government expects franchise holders to take commercial risk while Euston and its approaches are torn to shreds for a decade I know not. They didn't expect it during the Thameslink works so why expect it for the West Midlands and West Coast frachises during HS2 works?

Well the problems are entirely of the DfT's making and having a pile of disasters to deal with couldn't happen to a nicer (hah!) Secretary of State. Idiot features Grayling deserves all the trouble he gets - every ministry he's in charge becomes a complete and utter mess. He should be demoted to the backbenches.

The DfT have activated an 8 week extension (2 accounting periods) to the London Midland franchise. This reflects delays to the award of the new franchise. A further 8 week extension into early 2018 can be activated by the DfT on or before 18 August 2017. There is no DfT press release on their site yet but Go Ahead have released the relevant info. www.go-ahead.com/en/media/news/2017/london-midland-franchise-extension.html
