Are there any in London. What is a bus preservation group and what do they do?

If i could afford it in the future, I would definitely buy a bus for preservation. One of the many things i dream of is owning my own bus. I'd join an existing preservation group (if there is one for old Croydon buses), but say if I had enough space to park the bus on my drive? Would that be a decent enough place to store it?

Are there any in London. What is a bus preservation group and what do they do? A bus preservation group does what it says on the tin. They preserve buses for posterity! The Bromley group has been mentioned : they have (mostly) vehicles from South East and South London. Upminster and District are out east and have Titans, a DMS and an RML, amongst other things, The London Bus Museum in Weybridge are always after volunteers. They have lots of significant buses including a Guy Utility, a green RLH, Metrobus M6 and Stagecoach TA1. Plenty of other smaller groups around too : including groups who own single vehicles such as the RM8 Club. Have a Google and see what else you can find.

Can the preservation group help u in buying the bus and advice on keeping the bus? I'm sorry if this is a bit of a grumpy and harsh reply but a few things are clear from this thread. 1. You clearly don't know all the very many ins and outs of bus ownership and the costs. 2. Unless you have a lot of time on your hands and a lot of spare money bus ownership may not be for you regardless of your evident abundant enthusiasm. 3. Several people have gently hinted that involvement with a preservation group would give you some insight as to what is involved and access to people with the right knowledge. 4. You are not going to get every last bit of info from people on this forum. 5. The best avenue is to volunteer with a preservation group or the London Bus Museum. If I was you I would be open and honest with whoever you approach. Now you either just want to suck all the relevant info out of people's brains and then go and do your own thing *or* you genuinely want to learn and will therefore put in the required effort and time with a group or museum over a decent period of time. People are not going to appreciate you turning up once in a while to pester them with questions and then vanish. To be honest I can't tell from your postings if you want to get your hands dirty with a group or museum or you're just trying to get info from people to save yourself time and effort. 6. If you're just after a short cut to the knowledge then I think you're on a hiding to nothing. If you want to own a vehicle and if you did manage to get the info it is very clear to me that a lot of effort is still needed - you need to keep on top of maintenance, ensure bills are paid, keep licences and skills in date and ensure you comply with other rules if you want to use it. If you actually want to run some sort of bus service then you're into a different situation altogether with a lot of regulations and legal duties to comply with. Any way you look at this there are no real short cuts or cheap ways to do it. I have actually thought about whether I wanted to buy and own a second hand bus. I've certainly had the cash in the past to buy one. However I quickly concluded that the ongoing monetary cost was far too much for me and I have no interest in mending engines, bashing body panels or upholstering seats. That's beyond my competence and skills. Furthermore I'd have needed to take a car driving test and then wait to take PVC lessons and pass that test. All of that would need to be paid for and there are no obvious places locally for me to store a bus either. I think you have to make a pretty ruthless assessment of yourself and your finances.

So a car garage wouldn't fit any bus? Were u suggesting to make a garage or to park it somewhere else? Do u know a website that shows the rules of keeping a bus? No offence but if you cannot realise that a bus would not even fit in a car garage without measuring it; I don't think it would be a wise idea for you to pursue buying a bus.

Thanks snoggle for clarifying. Anyways I am not unhappy about what u guys say here! Its just talk! Its nothing serious! I have still got time to learn! I want to learn from u guys and it is a good idea for me volunteering with a preservation group(which I will when the time is right!) I dont want to have infromation. I want to work hard and get myself with a preservation group. I certainly dont want a shortcut!

We've got members that have the ability to drive one. We've got members that have the technical and mechanical knowledge and you've got the members who'd be keen on doing the odd jobs, just be be involved. I think the biggest issue would be deciding over which vehicle you'd want to preserve! I'm in my 30's and would love to preserve something from the 80's-90's period. ie, M, LS, MA, LLW, 1st generation Dart slf's or Olympians. Whereas someone older or younger would probably love to preserve something totally different.

I was thinking of a titan maybe but the lez zone would be an issue. Who knows maybe there would be enough intrest to get something started.
