I happened to be in Bury St Edmunds today and stood on the station at about 6pm and observed the Ipswich and Peterborough service come in at the same time. Surprised how busy both trains were. The new Trains are breathtaking and kind of a hybrid regional/Express train.
I think I read somewhere that the Peterborough service is going to be doubled to an hourly service, is this still going to happen?
Also the new trains are dual voltage, so I wonder if there is any scope to have a direct London service from Bury st Edmunds?

Reviving this thread - there is to be a Class 321 Farewell Tour at the end of April. The Class 321s entered service between 1988 and 1991 and and now some of the oldest trains on the UK mainline rail network. Leaving Liverpool Street at 09.40 on Saturday 29th April, the tour will take in many of the routes on which the trains ran including Clacton-on-Sea, Walton-on-the-Naze, Harwich Town, Stowmarket and Southend Victoria. The tour will also take in some loops and other sections of railway that are not normally used by passenger services. It is due back into Liverpool Street at 18.57. Cost for the tour is £70, or £35 for children age 5-15. All profits will be shared between three charities: East Anglia Children's Hospices (EACH), Havens Hospices (South Essex) and the Railway Mission. There will be no refreshments on the train but participants are welcome to bring their own on board, or make use of a 50-minute lunchtime stop at Clacton. More details and booking here: railplus.greateranglia.co.uk/class-321-farewell-charity-train-event.html

Last day of regular service for Greater Anglia's 321 units will be Monday 3rd April, when they will be used on services between Colchester and Walton-on-the-Naze throughout the day. A handful of units will be retained as spares after this date, but will only make ad-hoc appearances when needed. Greater Anglia has already announced a Class 321 Farewell Railtour, this will take place on Saturday 29th April and will start and finish at London Liverpool Street. tangytango.proboards.com/post/740208

I think some even had a refurb in recent years unless I am getting my classes mixed up.

Yes they were still being used across the network until recently but the entry into service of the last 720 units is making them redundant. They were refurbished between 2016 and 2018 as part of the "Renatus" project, at a cost of £3.8 million.

Always seems such a waste when trains are refurbished close to being withdrawn! The District Line D stock was one that seemed such a waste.

Always seems such a waste when trains are refurbished close to being withdrawn! The District Line D stock was one that seemed such a waste. The Greater Anglia 321s came in at around £70,000 each which actually isn't bad value for a 4-6 year operational life. It also showed that the new franchise was prepared to make some interim improvements to travelling conditions before the arrival of the new trains.
