Something I don't quite understand is the FirstDay Greenline Ticket? Does this enable one to buy the ticket on the 702 at Victoria and then can be used on any First Berkshire bus? Because the publicity on the First Berkshire website is a bit mah so I would appreciate any insiders knowledge.

I would say the R8 is a must do route, it is very wacky.

On that note, I remember @eggmeister posted a list of 10 routes with the shortest running time a few years ago. The (N)321 and 401 were included on that list. As the 321 was listed as the fastest night route, I had a ride on one after a very late rail replacement shift - it was around 03:30 from New Cross, needless to say with one of the Euro 5 TopoDyn Enviros which I can only assume the driver had cherry picked. The running times did have a little give in them, but the driver clearly knew how to handle the route. He spent most of the slack time entertaining arguments with chip wielding Venue revellers who were trying (not) to pay the fare with cash. As for how fast the bus went between stops, this clip should give an idea of how hard the buses are pushed - not much shy of 50mph . Asides from Lewisham Station, Lee Green, Eltham High Street and Sidcup High Street, there were barely any stops. We arrived at Foots Cray Tesco 2 minutes late. The bus back to town was driven by a feather footed driver on an early turn - and it got rather busy for a Sunday morning! It's a recommended ride if you happen to be in this side of town - but won't be as good with the more common B9 WVLs.

This is my local night bus, hanging around in New Cross at 3 in the morning isn't much fun on the way home from Central. But once you get on the bus the speed is really fun.

Travelling from Central to Lewisham, I will always favour the amazingly quick night 53 over direct, but winding routes like the N21, N89, N136 or N199. The wait at New Cross is a small price to pay for the time savings involved. I'll also confess to voluntarily going out in New Cross (Venue), supporting the local economy and all that . The 321 certainly deserves its status as the fastest night route, it's best when anything but the B9s appear on it. Those enviros put E400H right back in their place!!!!!! They really have kick-butt performance, you want to get behind the wheel of one .

Outside London , but if beautiful English country scenery is your thing , try the 291 between East Grinstead and Royal Tunbridge Wells.

They are also quite nippy aswell !

I hated it at first being an ex-London lightweight who thought he knew everything, but it's definitely grown on me. As preference I try and get a 400 to do it, but a Solo can be fun too. Moz
