Something different for you to try. All involve the original British vehicle registration system (not the present mickey mouse arrangement!)
1. What factor decided with authorities would be allocated the original single letter marks (as seen on the London-Brighton VCC veteran cars etc) , i.e. A, B, C, D,E etc etc?
2. The formerly unused marks of OO and WC were allocated to which authority and approx when?
3. What have the following single letter marks especially in common: D, E, F, H, N, R, T and U ? (there were others)
4. Which was the last registration mark (e.g. GL = Bath) to be allocated before World War II ? (and the last for many years)
5. The letters BF were originally allocated to where (but were withdrawn due to complaints). Where were they reissued to latterly?
6. The Post Office had a large allocation of which mark?
7. Where in the British Isles can one see 'U' suffixes?
8. And where would you find a numbers-only registration system?
9. Which was the first authority to use reversed (numbers before letters) marks?
10. Only two British trolleybus systems used reversed marks (one on just one vehicle). Which two?

Well, this is a pretty poor show. No attempts yet? I'll give you a couple:
1. Single letter marks were originally allocated in order of population (highest first), i.e. A=London; B=Lancashire and so on.
2. Essex, early 1960s.
3. All were used in 'reversed' format, e.g. 1243 F (Eastern National had some for example

Mr/Ms jtuthill, full marks for ingenuity on no. 3 but not what I had in mind - I've already given you the answer anyway!!
Answer time I think.
4. Last mark to be allocated (prior to OO, WC & BF) was JP for Wigan (1934) 5. BF was originally Dorset. Re-allocated to Staffordshire, 1960s. 6. GPO (can't say I've heard of SYF marks) 7. Isle of Man 8. Yes, Guernsey 9. Staffordshire, with 'E' (incomplete set) followed by Middlesex with 'H'. 10. Bournemouth (and Belfast with the one vehicle).

Roofbox, It's John-I must admit i read the question not noticing you'd given some of the answers. funny the way your brain works, soon as I saw the single letters I immediately thought of garage codes!! The SYF*** was a registration seen around London on the Austin J2 Royal Mail vans. Your GPO are you referring to the green telephone vans?

Not sure which vehicles were involved - just know that the GPO reserved lots of GPO marks (1950s/60s).
