Starts this year between Dalston and NXG on the East London Line in December 2017 and then extended to Highbury some time in 2018 according to the BBC and Londonist. That will likely be the only bit because TfL control most of it and there's no freight or block access for maintenance works as there is on Network Rail tracks. Obviously Highbury to Dalston is NR but no freight on those lines and I assume TfL have reached agreement with NR over maintenance.

The station to watch on this is Whitechapel and how it will function during night operation considering it is still under construction, with the new section of the station not set to open until late 2018 (correct me if I'm wrong). Nonetheless this news is welcomed , would of much preferred a night DLR (Bank - Lewisham) but I'll put that on the Christmas list for 2018 to Sadiq *fingers c rossed*

The answer is that it won't function during night operation, unfortunately. This article states that the night service won't call at Whitechapel until the works are completed, expected to be "summer 2018".

This is because the tracks south of Mudchute belong to the CGL private contractor responsible for the infrastructure. It would cost far too much to run night services over the link and could impede the maintenance. Also CGL have to ensure the infrastructure is in appropriate condition before it transfers to DLR / TfL when their contract expires and their costs are fully paid off. It would be foolhardy of TfL to create a situation where CGL could argue their ability to achieve "hand back" had been impeded by TfL's own actions. It also increases the risk of TfL being landed with bills for asset rectification and legal costs. Hence why TfL have ruled this out until the next concession contract so it can be priced under competitive pressures and CGL will be out of the picture.

Maybe the part 4 track line is why they would go up to Highbury & Islington.

Maybe the part 4 track line is why they would go up to Highbury & Islington. It certainly helps but a few things a) it has no overnight freight traffic b) it is a relatively new piece of track and was fully rebuild so the asset health is good c) it does not have an inherited "block period" of track closure for Network Rail to do inspections and regular maintenance. These all help in TfL being able to run trains Fri-Sat nights to Highbury. What happens when the adjacent NLL is closed for maintenance block works will be interesting. I assume some sort of cordon will be required to protect track workers. Almost every bit of the rail network has provisions for either fast or slow lines to close after a certain time in the evening or for certain lines or sections of lines to be closed at weekends, start up late on Sunday mornings or on weekday evenings to allow for NR maintenance inspections, checks and regular maintenance. You can see examples of all of this around London - the GOBLIN closes every 8 weeks, the Chingford line as no service Mon-Thurs evenings every 8 weeks, the NLL opens later on Sunday mornings to give NR more time overnight etc etc etc.
