This seems to have gone unnoticed, but the Essex County Council-contract route 501 (Harlow-Ongar via Epping) which runs 2-hourly on Sundays and is operated by NIBS of Wickford, has been withdrawn at short notice. I believe the last day of operation was Sunday 25th March. This is no doubt due to the fact that Trustybus operate commercial route 420 hourly along the exact same route.
This is the last remnant the old County Bus/Arriva routes 500/501 which operated between Harlow and Romford/Brentwood.
It also brings NIBS out of the Harlow area, which is quite far from its Wickford base!

I was always quite surprised that NIBS bidded to run the 501 considering the distance of the route from its wickford base

It's good though that Trustybus see it as possible to operate a Sunday service commercially.

It's good though that Trustybus see it as possible to operate a Sunday service commercially. Indeed that is a positive, well done to them. It makes sense, as it makes it seem more worthwhile for regular passengers to get season tickets. Good to see an operator running commercially on a Sunday, especially an independent operator. Also saves Essex CC a bit of money. I wonder if a similar scenario would occur if the bus industry is ever taken into state ownership?... hmmmm.

Well, that would depend on the objectives of the State, and whether they were prepared to back these objectives up with financial commitment. It is worth noting that some of the Companies that are municipally-owned (so in local government ownership rather than Nationalised, which is quite different), such as Reading Buses, have good Sunday networks and many of their routes operate commercially on Sunday.
