I had to laugh at one of the ill informed comments in the article - someone blaming Kahn for removing conductors when I'm pretty sure it was Boris who got rid of them after working out his sums were wrong.
Come on, at least blame Kahn for something that he has actually done.

Clearly nobody has been reassured by TfL saying they had no plans to axe the 48.

In all fairness it was both mayors that had a part in removing conductors. After the 38 no further conversions at all had conductors due to the funding issue, and what Khan did was finish a cost saving exercise started by his predecessor.

Yes fair enough but it was Mr Khan that put the final nail in the coffin.

There was NEVER a plan to put conductors on all NB4L routes. Boris implied there was but that was not true. Slightly debatable therefore that Boris "killed off" anything given it never existed in the first place. The current Mayor killed the NB4L customer assistants to save £10m a year. Look what good that did given the massive losses of revenue due to declining patronage.

Look what good that did given the massive losses of revenue due to declining patronage. During Boris Johnson's reign the 148 was the first route to be converted without 'customer assistants', at which point TfL announced that whether c.a.s would be used on future conversions would be decided on a route by route basis. After a couple more total opo conversions it was announced that Arriva South London would be getting LTs for the 159 and that someone would be employed on the back, indeed, the company advertised the positions in the local press : somewhere, I have a copy of the ad. I can't remember the exact chronology, but a little while later it was announced the 137 would be converted at Brixton instead, and that c.a.s WOULDN'T be employed, and the 159 was going to Abellio anyway. There was still no admission that there'd be no further c.a.s, but the writing was clearly on the wall. Boris Johnson has never, as far as I know, made a comment on this reversal of the prime reason for introducing LTs, and I'm afraid the Standard and the rest of the press that have always given him an easy ride never pressed him on it.
As said, when Sadiq Khan became Mayor he quickly killed the 'conductor' concept altogether on cost grounds. Interestingly, it was only when they were being scrapped that they got referred to officially as conductors, rather than customer assistants.

Yes I know all the history. I was referring to papers that were released to the Assembly Budget Sub Committee that included the early business case papers for the NB4L. In those papers it was clearly stated that the first 250 (or so) buses would be crewed and non after that. Given the Mayor initially ordered 600 buses that meant 350 buses would NEVER be crewed. I don't really care very much that the Standard is an incompetent form of media and was the lead Bozza cheer machine. The facts were clear from the start - it's just that a lot of people lied about them.
