I think because it's outside the London area that TFL are reluctant. I did hear something once that Kent Police weren't keen.

I think that myth (along with the myth that Dartford Council "wouldn't allow a night service") was disproved in a previous discussion on this forum. if that was the case how come Arriva ran a night service on the 480/490 for a while? Ted B Well I've never heard that one before,I thought it was hybrids Dartford Council supposedly wouldn't allow? Anyway back to reality and the point was that TfL are unlikely to fund a night service to Dartford. All things considered a night service on the 422 might be a better option serving the Bedonwell area, Welling is already served by the N89.

Do you mean Darent Valley Hospital or has a new hospital been built. quote author=" laurier" source="/post/514060/thread" timestamp="1563559206"]Living in Welling And being retired I do use the 96 to travel to Bluewater on occasions, usually around mid morning. The 96 can get very busy with shoppers travelling to Bluewater and I have been on ones which are virtually full, particularly on the lower deck. I have seen wheelchair passengers unable to board at Crayford because the wheelchair space is already occupied. I am sure disabled or elderly people travelling from the Erith areato hospital appointments at Darenth Valley will appreciate having to change at Crayford and face the possibility of not being able to get on a 96. I must confess that when returning from Bluewater there seem to be less people on board than when travelling to Bluewater. certainly there is a lot of pressure on lower deck space during school holidays and also with mothers with young children in buggies. One other point that whilst the 96 is supposed to have hybrid buses , all the comfortable Volvo hybrids have now gone and most of Plumsteads Scanias are on the 96 each day and I am sure passengers appreciate being jolted about on seats not much better than a wooden plank of the 30 or 40 minute journey to Bluewater or Darenth Valley (particularly if they are going to outpatients about a back problem if they do withdraw the 428 after Crayford, and are presumably double decking the Erich/Crayford section because of demand then there are going to a be quite a few people waiting at Crayford for a 96. As I recall, this possibility was raised some time ago, and I believe the local new shopper paper organised a petition which attracted a large number of signatures, and the proposal was opposed by Bexley (and Dartford ?) councils Laurie [/quote]

An N96 running from Dartford to North Greenwich probably could work. I wonder if it would be well used enough though, the N89 would parallel it between Welling, and Bexleyheath which from a TfL point of view would reduce the viability of the N96. The issue is how much demand there would be, I think the N96 would need to connect to the night tube, but at the same time, I'm sure cab firms in Dartford do a good trade ferrying people to/from London.

I suspect the N89 parallel for that comparatively insignificant distance is one of the reasons for the non-existence of a night 96. I wonder whether Dartford not being in London is a bit of a red herring, like Waltham Cross is. TfL and its predecessors have never had issues with providing road transport services to the area. If it were profitable, surely they'd be happy to do so at night? i do agree with those who suggest cutting out the section east of Dartford, though, and an extension from Woolwich might be considered too, though not necessarily to North Greenwich.

Where do you propose sending the N96 for its western terminus? Of course another option would be to extend the N53 to Dartford so that Dartford has night links to Central London, the issue would then be reliability though

I reckon a Central London link to Dartford is probably a non-starter now, unfortunately.

Or alternatively extend the N21 to Dartford via the 96. I would also extend the N136 to Sidcup Station.

Waltham Cross has the N279 which comes all the way into Central London (Trafalgar Square). Road layouts a bit different from the south side though! Anyway, Waltham Cross was historically connected to all of Smithfield, Kings Cross, Holborn Circus, Liverpool Street and Tottenham Court Road by DAY routes, whereas Dartford's nearest point to central London was only ever Woolwich, or Charlton Station at a stretch. Southern Electric was Dartford's link to City and West End, and provided a vg, reliable service by three different routes, though, granted, not by night, and nothing much has changed apart from the reliability!

Not sure how I only just found this thread : nonetheless none of this is a surprise. 492 - arguably OK - hopefully will make the route a bit more reliable. 428 - interchange to Dartford bound 96s looks poor. Can’t help but think merging the 428 with the 469 and double decking the lot would be a good plan.

When run by Stagecoach the 469 was very reliable. What’s changed? I know that parking enforcement along Plumstead High Street causes some delays, but not sure if that fully accounts for it.
