Could the Wilmington section be replaced by rerouting the B12? At Leyton Cross it would turn right and run 1 mile to Wilmington instead of left then running the same distance back to Coldblow. The only stop no longer served would be Bexley Park - still served by the 429. I know this is unlikely to happen but would not require a PVR increase. Only issue is standing/a hesitation point - I'd say Brewer's Field or outside the memorial hall but residents may not like this. Not local so feel free to correct me. It would be great if TFL could do that, but I wouldn’t expect them to.

A huge blow for many communities. I’ve been on standing room only 477s between Swanley and Dartford before so I don’t know what’s happened to it.
To be frank i think the whole public transport system is screwed up.

I was talking to someone in Orpington today and they gave up using the 477 a while ago as it's just too unreliable with regular cancellations, even the last buses of the day have failed to turn up. For Swanley the 51 to Sidcup and the 233 or train from St Mary Cray is more reliable

Their on demand service has become appalling as well. I’ve tried booking it and often get informed no trips available or a 45 min plus wait.

To be frank i think the whole public transport system is screwed up. Yes I grew up using the route from Swanley to Dartford and Bluewater before we moved to Sidcup. It was always packed in the 2000s. I think the £7 or so fares might have something to do with it, maybe people just can’t afford those high fares now days.

My mum wouldn’t have been able to afford the high fares everyday. But it was cheaper to get a half rate 16-18 monthly Oyster for £40 and get the 2 buses, and then be able to use it to go out with friends around Bromley etc.

Go Coach have the right idea. £2.50 flat fare or £5 all day ticket. Tried using Arriva Click again today. Despite seeing a van parked up nearby it first said no trips available, then quoted a 29 min wait, then the van drove off !

Maybe they could make it work. And Arriva’s On Demand service sounds hilariously crap.

Swanley Town Council have announced that Go Coach have taken on the 477 and it will be ran Mondays to Saturdays from Swanley Station to Dartford Station via Hextable & Wilmington. Great news. The Swanley to Orpington section is dead though, so nothing for Crockenhill which is still a shame but better than nothing. It’ll be an hourly service.

But how long before Go-Coach will reduce it to 3-4 journeys a day? Just like many other routes as Go-coach takes over it then destroys it. Hopeful R6 can go to terminate in Crockenhill? But TfL won't do it for the cover section.

If demand is as weak as it currently seems to be, it won’t last long, if people find it’s more reliable than the current 477, they may return to it and Go-Coach will persevere. There’s nowhere to terminate the R6 in Crockenhill, so unless they project it to Swanley Station, that’s a non starter. I still think the best Crockenhill can hope for is an extension of Go2.

And if the R6 is rerouted it will lose the link to St Mary Cray Station. Ideally fund a one bus hourly 477 service between Orpington War Memorial and Swanley on a trial basis? I think a reliable service might bring back a few former users.

It’s a shame they can’t introduce an R12 to cover the loss. Orpington Station Orpington, High Street Orpington, Carlton Parade St Mary Cary, High Street Crockenhill Swanley Station Swanley, High Street Swanley, Asda The thing is Go Coach would make more money running it from Bluewater to Orpington, they are missing out on potential passengers. They are throwing away half of the profit by only running a part of the route.

An operator is prepared to provide a commercial service over a section of the route outside London, but cannot make the section into Greater London viable and neither TfL or the County are prepared to pay for it.
