Well I will lovingly tell the organisers to plonk ride London in your part of London and have them close the entire area. Plus the marathon, the big half, umpteen 10k’s. Leave my area of London alone, we have had enough of LTN / empty cycle lane c*** already Only the wearer knows where the shoe pivhes Thank you for that. What an awful thing to say. Designed totally to wind people up : congratulations, you’ve managed it with me. Well I am a bit tired of people being condescending and telling people in east London to “live with it” when frankly half the roads are blocked off, including the only 2 river crossings in the area - these people will be up in arms if their local road is blocked for a few hours. Don’t forget that we also have to live with the marathon, big half and a few other 10k’s / cycle events. As an example, a friend’s wife went into Labour a few years back on marathon day (they live on westferry road in the southern part) - the poor lady had to walk half a mile to where my friend had fortuitously parked his car (this was when the mass crowds had just started coming) and then had a loooong journey to royal London So yes if I have managed to get you winded up you are only experiencing 1% of the angst people in east London have to deal with so frankly I couldn’t care less

As I’ve said elsewhere, I have learned a lot these last few days, and primarily what I have learned is I have little in common with the majority of forum members.

I know it causes disruption but I really don't see why it should be cancelled just to please people in East London and Essex. They could always hold it in a different part of London each year. Why not for example have it around Croydon/Bromley boroughs and into Tandridge, some if the steepest hills in London and makes a change in scenery. There maybe some people in the race training for something bigger like the Tour de France, or even the Olympics and this gives them inspiration to try. Well I will lovingly tell the organisers to plonk ride London in your part of London and have them close the entire area. Plus the marathon, the big half, umpteen 10k’s. Leave my area of London alone, we have had enough of LTN / empty cycle lane c*** already Only the wearer knows where the shoe pivhes Your area of London? When did I ever say anything about holding it in Greenwich? Besides if it did operate in my area of London I wouldn't be that concerned it's only one day and if I could go somewhere on the train/working on that day it wouldn't be that bad. Also, whilst I don't live in Ealing, there's still the Ealing half marathon once a year which disrupts roads around Ealing. Instead of cycling to central London for work via Ealing Broadway which is the route I would normally take, instead I had to use the A40. So East London isn't the only area prone to event disruption, don't see why you have to get so defensive just because I said it shouldn't be cancelled. If you think that it should be cancelled then that's your opinion but that's not to say that I endorse it.

I'm in the Greenwich area and I've been here on every marathon day since it began, bar one. And you know what? It's the best day of the year round these parts. The Big Half's a cracking day, too. RideLondon's organised by the same people, and if it gives people a chance to achieve something special and raise some cash for causes, or inspires people to get off their backsides and get a bit more active, then a single day a year that's flagged up well in advance is no big deal in the great scheme of things.
I do feel sorry for people who live in Wapping who bear the brunt of more than their fair share of closures - and when events aren't well run they can be an absolute pain (Run to the Beat in Greenwich and Wembley in the late 00s/early 10s wasn't much fun). But on the whole they make life in this city much more interesting.

I agree with this, if it took a different route every year then it wouldn't be met with so much opposition. It would also make the course itself much more interesting. The fact it affects the same areas year after year means everyone it affects just becomes annoyed of the disruption. I personally was very relieved when it stopped being funded by Surrey as I hated the disruption it caused. If the course was different every year then people would know they would have maybe 10 years before it returned to their area, so they would be much more supportive. The only drawback is that it takes a huge amount of planning to change a route. This would have to be done months in advance. The marathon is different though because it's far more well known. It feels more iconic to keep the same route each time. Plus apart from the first few km, it's relatively flat from Woolwich to Tower Bridge and to the Isle of Dogs and back. I still wouldn't be happy if it got scrapped, many runners and cyclists for Marathon and Ride London respectively trained for months. It's not easy to run a marathon. Runners may have to overcome sickness or injury before the marathon too The original marathon route was designed to limit disruption, which is why most of its first 10 miles are through residential areas and then the next 10 were through run-down dockland areas. Things have changed somewhat on the Isle of Dogs since then... Richard Branson and the Evening Standard tried to float the idea of changing the route about a decade ago, but the idea (thankfully) went nowhere, I think a lot of runners enjoy the build-up and the crowds through "real" London before hitting the sights.

Absolutely I did. The course has become so iconic now that anything other than minor change would cause uproar. There’s still the annual hate from Wapping though! One of the two years I did the LM the East London line also fell over which wasn’t ideal, but it is only twice a year…

I understand their pain and a lot of sporting events take place there but there are other events in other parts of London causing disruption like Ealing Half marathon

Quite a lot of East London feels similarly about the marathon too, particularly as I’ve said areas around Wapping and Shadwell. In this case though, for a significant majority, the marathon has been there longer than you have, so, sad to say, it’s tough cheese.

Anyway this is going to no where so no point carrying on the discussion.

Several residents do though - and trying to shut down a conversation because I and a couple of others disagree with you is not a good look, I’m afraid.

I disagree with every single one of them but I’ll defend their right to the nth degree to say how dreadful I am 😂

Especially as it is a Sunday traffic levels are likely to be lower. Think about people living in Barnes and Castlenau who have lost their services to Hammersmith (bar the 533) for 4 years now, due to the closure of Hammersmith Bridge. Then there's people complaining that they will lose access to their two river crossings on Sunday. I know that crossing the Thames in East London is difficult but it's one day, not half a decade! Castlenau feels like a ghost town because of the closure. What about when Wandsworth Bridge is closed? Residents from imperial wharf and Sands End wanting to access Wandsworth will have to either travel via Putney or Clapham Junction.

With respect you are just digging up more and pointless comparisons to try and win the argument. Sunday traffic levels lower? haha that's funny go take a drive in the Ilford and Beckton area on a Sunday afternoon!
You even agreed how long the bus diversion list is! I think its probably more routes than the Marathon. Yes I started the thread but really don't have the energy to argue! You are clearly pro bike which is fine but I'd rather be pro public transport.
