That’s good they should. Honestly the amount of times a week I see bus drivers letting people on without paying. I get that the drivers don’t want the agro of an argument, but why should I pay if other people don’t? The DLR stations need more barriers as well.

This is good particularly on the buses. They are some routes that are notorious for allowing people to walk past.

As I understand it drivers are presently required to call the punter back for payment/display of pass but if they don't for one reason or another the driver logs it as unpaid fare and continues driving the bus. In essence there's not much else drivers can do except to refuse to move the bus, which potentially opens up worse case scenarios and perhaps even being reported on by ibus for affecting route performance.

TfL claim to have more than 450 revenue inspectors checking tickets daily but I very rarely see them. Fare evasion has rocketed in many cities around the world post pandemic, it seems people just got used to free travel whilst the restrictions were in place.

Noticed a sharp increase in ticket checks on the DLR whenever I use it.
The DLR is probably is probably one of the worse services to lose revenue simply because it has no barriers or hardly any staffed stations.

May be a silly question but what if you used Apple / Google Pay? How do they check it?

Will be curious long term how this will affect tube stations where fare evasion is more brazen. For example I was at Barking last year for a running day and was quite shocked how many would pass the barriers. Sets a bad example for sure if you are law abiding.
On buses I felt it is more tricky due to a broken systematic approach and processes that could penalise the driver. Esp at night and to the cost of passenger safety (more hassle to refuse + witnessed awful behaviour when let on towards passengers).

When I used to use it alot (pre COVID) PSA's were always doing checks during the day anyway they don't seem to these days much .

As I said I do feel like there has been a sharp increase not decrease in checks. I think I have had a ticket check on every recent occasion even when boarding at Shadwell for Bank.

Last week a passenger tried to tap on the bus with a lighter. Yet the confused driver let them on probably feeling sorry for them but pretty confident it was excellent acting.
I think there needs to be a push on children with free travel. If you don't have your pass then sorry.

Maybe not too little but definitely too late I feel. All too often I see fare evasion promoted on social media so it is necessary to intervene in this culture.
