Shame, might have been better to just buy extra new trains! Seems to be a common occurrence that new/refurbished trains have "terribly uncomfortable" seats. I suspect the seats have been changed. Originally they replaced the 4REP and 4TC with their deep sprung seats (and loose wooden dining chairs in the restaurant), so seemed to lack padding compared to their predecessors. But the old stock could be quite bouncy (no air suspension). I used to travel on these quite a bit (I grew up in New Milton, and my parents were there for a few years when I first came to London), first time I ever saw one was either late 1987 or early 1988, one pulled up at New Milton on a test run (was before any entered service) and in original condition, double guards van, composite coach with 6*6 First class compartments and 14 standard seats and tiny dot matrix destination display in top of gangway connection. Not sure reintroducing 31 year old trains was the most cost efficient move. Or what reasoning says spend so much, then fit out out with cheapest seats.

Or SWR could eventually inherit the 350/2s or 360s to enhance the desiro fleet

Or what reasoning says spend so much, then fit out out with cheapest seats. Comment elsewhere suggests that the seats are essentially the same as were fitted when Southern refitted the trains for GatEx work. They have new covers etc but essentially the design is unchanged. Obviously I can't confirm that as I never travelled on 442s when on GatEx work and am unlikely to see them on SWR work.

I can only imagine what they would be like from Penzance.

I can only imagine what they would be like from Penzance. I've only travelled from Penzance to Truro on one so far, and that was far enough! My last Paddington trip I ensured was on an HST, but that option being no longer available I may seriously have to consider driving in future, given Paddington is nowhere near my objective in London anyway, and the cost is no more, possibly less in fact.

2410 at Clapham Yard. Luckily I probably won’t ever be working those things.
