As someone who doesn't live in the area can anyone tell me why the 357 has a Sunday extension? I know years back Sunday extensions used to quite common. Looking at it from an outside point of view I can't help but think that either you extend the route the other days of the week or drop the Sunday extension all together. As Sunday frequencies drop on buses going to Whipps across, my guess is that by having the extension it keeps some level of frequency from Walthamstow to the main hospital of the area, and arguably borough. That’s my guess as a resident of neighbouring Redbridge, but even then have pretty much exclusively gone to Whipps my whole life.

Good to see drivers stop and hold a minute’s silence at 11am today, for the loss of the driver on the R11 earlier last week. And this was on the 251, on the polar opposite side of London.

Guess I'll have a go at this one. There's enough capacity for the 357 to operate at 2bph on Sundays, so why not put single deckers on for one day and extend it to the hospital grounds at Whipps Cross if passenger flows dictate it? I overheard a couple elderly passengers a few months aback saying they'd use the link for over 5 years to either have visits or check ups on Sundays and they were actually complaining that the 357 wasn't extended there daily! The 357 extension may shift a small amount of passengers to the hospital grounds directly but it's those very same passengers that can't be begotten with using the Hopper Fare as an excuse. Sometimes every journey does matter

There will be a lot more busier single decker routes I'm sure.

There will be a lot more busier single decker routes I'm sure. Snoggle has talked about the 357’s loadings many times before. He says that while it’s definitely not the busiest route in the world, school and peak loadings can be very heavy, especially when the 97 is playing up hence justifying its double decker allocation. I’ve seen a 192-WS leaving Walthamstow Bus Station at around 9pm on a Sunday evening on the 357 before, it left with a standing load.

I would say the 357 can be very heavily loaded at peak times, with short riders connecting to and from the Victoria Line at Walthamstow Central. This is less critical on a Sunday so the route can get away with single-deckers then.

That’s my guess as a resident of neighbouring Redbridge, but even then have pretty much exclusively gone to Whipps my whole life. The main route was to be extended years ago when it was 97A, I recall Leon Daniels saying when he was at First that they were intending to use low height double deckers to go under the bridge corridor in the hospital. But there was concern from LT that the wrong bus would end up being used and could risk a bridge strike. The Sunday service used midi buses in the 90's, this was later extended to Whipps Cross hospital and has remained as it is. Although now with larger single decks. If a double deck is used on a Sunday it is curtailed at the roundabout like weekdays. The time the 97A went into the hospital in the early 90's Waltham Forest Council were part subsidising it. This also had a re-routing of the W15 to serve the hospital and then the W12 also to serve the hospital.

Sometimes every journey does matter Up until a few years ago I remember it hardly took much people into the hospital, most of the times it was single figures, the same when it was departing as well. Sometimes it left empty as it would be behind a W12/15/19

A mix of all though the current crop of vehicles are probably the most dullest ones around so my interest is waning on that side of things.
