Is it still possible to hire a London bus? Approximately how much does it cost? Can you choose the type of bus or do you take what you are offered?

It depends on the company and whether they have a private hire fleet or not. London United have a private hire fleet and you will get a choice of single deck pointer darts, Double Deck ALX400s and Routemasters. You can chose between any one of those.
However with companies like Metroline you will probably referred to Westbus if they have any vehicles spare but generally if you ask for a Double Deck, you will more than likely get a VP or VW. Single Deck, you will get a DE or MM and for Routemasters, you will probably get RM644 which is an open top.

If your looking a bigger selection of heritage private hire vehicles, then the London Bus Company could be worth checking out. They have Titans (1 Leyland Titan PD3 and a few Leyland Titan B15s), RM's, RT's, an RF and a super rare open top AEC Beadle

Also, Arriva have a small private hire fleet of Routemasters.
As vjaska says, London Bus Company have a large selection of private hire vehicles, and I reckon this company will be very reliable as well.

I would certainly recomend The London Bus Company. Some friends of mine used them recently to travel Lowestoft, a journey which we made in an RF with none other than owner Roger Wright driving. Sadly the likes of Arriva, Stagecoach and Go-Ahead were unable to help as it was alledged to be too far. Thank god that Roger came to the rescue and saved the day. We all agreed should have gone to him in the first place.

First group also do private hires at various locations so worth giving them a call. Cost wise they usually charge for the diesel and a drivers wages for the day

I will recommend Go-Aheads private hire department, its run by a very friendly (if slightly ageing ;D ) group of people, and the drivers will always do what it takes to get the job done. Not to mention the fleet of expertly maintained and well presented buses

Depends what youre looking for.
Go-ahead - if youre looking for a professionl approach, clean and modern vehicles. RM, RML, and DRM (doored) available, as well as Open toppers. Not Cheap however!!!
The London Bus Company - if you're looking for a varied choice, a more Sedate appearence, and traditional looks. Thier prices are not too bad either and i do see thier buses a lot so they do get a hell of a lot of work.
Sullivan Buses - Varied fleet old and modern, buses only i beleive though. Not sure of thier pricing structure.
Ensign - again Varied choice, Modern or Vintage. Again not sure on thier pricing.
Travelmasters - if youre looking for Cheap No Frills Coach Hire. They also have some ex london B7TL's so can hire them out as well. Reasonable Prices.
Go-Coach (not related to Go-Ahead) - if youre after modern Coach or Bus hire. They also have an RM. Not Sure what thier prices are like.
DJ Coaches - Very Popular round SE london and north Kent. Coach and Minibus hire, see thier vehicles a lot. Prices arent too bad either so i'm told.
The Little Bus Company - Used them personally, Seriously no frills bus hire, very cheap, but you get what you pay for!! None the less they will go anywhere, friend of mine booked them to take 20 of us to Brighton for a night out, they turned up on time as booked, with a Dennis Dart! None the less it got us there and back no problem!
Traditional Travel - Run by a family of Bus enthusiasts, have a couple of RM's they hire out. Very Professional looking and reasonable prices.
Then you have the usual Coach operators (if its coaches youre after) like Clarkes, Kings Ferry (now National Express owned), Reliance nd Redwing (Addison Lee owned). All very Clean and professional but all very expensive.

If it's Routemasters you're after, try Traditional Travel (near Orpington). Have 4 RMLs and 1 o/t RM. Friendly crews (I should know - I'm one of them!). Website available.

I'm not too keen on Traditional Travel as the buses never sound healthy and have various dents/ red gaffa tape holding pieces together
