Personally i think they are liars when the say there is no money. Especially when expensive and pointless (imo) projects such as that new hybrid for london thing that cost one million are brought about when there isnt anything wrong with current london buses. We have been uskng one staircase and two door buses for years now without major problems.
Anyway hope to see more normal hybrids for london come out of this.

The NBfL is out of TfL budget and nothing to do with the government, TfL is an separate organisation and can say where they invest the money they get.

Linked to this also, the government is going into inject £50 million into the Bus industry to make buses greener. Councils and bus companies teaming up to increase passengers on routes, which might include frequency increases, provide better information to passengers, make improvements to bus stations, bus priority schemes and advertising. Councils and Bus Companies need to submit bids for the money. The Government were cutting back on the spending for Public Transport and now theres a sudden injection of £90 million (£25 million Green Bus Fund Round 3, the £50 million said above, £10 million for community transport schemes and £5 million for the fitment of new equipment to TfL buses to reduce carbon emissions).

But NBfL is a qualifying model for green bus funding .... so whilst I would not expect it to be included ... remains a possibility

The £5m for TfL buses was included in the £25m green bus fund ... so the green bus fund is only £20m. On the plus side TfL have matched the DfTs £5m ... so that is £10m for carbon reductions in London ... what this entails and how far it goes remains to be seen.

Why can't they put a hold on 'Green' buses and wait for the country to bounce out of recession then put money into projects such as this

Why can't they put a hold on 'Green' buses and wait for the country to bounce out of recession then put money into projects such as this Because you have to balance costs v needs. Bus operators need a stimulus to order buses in hard times .... without order the bus building industry will collapse in the UK .... more people out of work ... so is it better to keep people in work collect income tax, corporation tax and VAT on what they produce or let the industry rot for good and put yet more people on the dole? If the public do not spend money and the government do not spend money .... the economy collapse ... it is a tight line between being prudent and making matters a lot worse.

I meant go back to conventional diesels for the time being not wasting money on hybrids.

Go and live in Greece, Ireland and Portugal .... see how bad things are there ... thankfully we are not as bad as these or some other countries ... but trying to run a country at the present time is never going to be a much thanked task ... especially when it was up the creek without a paddle when you took it over. Most of the troubles now stem back to the Brown era .... hopefully it will be the last time a Scot governs England.

I meant go back to conventional diesels for the time being not wasting money on hybrids. Because many operators, ok not all (ie the big groups) , would not bother ordering any vehicles in the current climate ... and need the incentive to do so. Without the last green bus funds ... I would bet Optare would have already have gone to the wall ... In additon with have air pollution commitments that have to met in order to avoid a multi-million pound fine hitting the UK government.

We may not be 'as bad' but we will be dragged into a much worse mess once the Euro goes to the wall, and it will. Cuts do not solve the problem, it does not create jobs, it does not boost an ailing economy.
