BUS fares are being slashed across Sheffield - to try to get more passengers on to public transport.
Passengers could save as much as £250 a year with the decision by First to cut single fares, daily, weekly, monthly and student tickets from Monday.
The new prices follow a three-month trial period, where fare promotions have been held on 23 different routes across Sheffield.
First bosses say passenger numbers increased during the trial.
From Monday, the maximum single fare anyone will pay within the Sheffield boundary will be £2 but students will only pay 60p.
Sheffield FirstDay tickets will be reduced to £3.40 - a saving of £1.20, Sheffield FirstWeek tickets will be reduced to £11 - a saving of £7.50 and Sheffield FirstMonth tickets will be reduced to £42 – a saving of £23.90.
A new Sheffield FirstWeek Student ticket is being introduced at a cost of £7.
Sheffield Council and South Yorkshire Integrated Transport Authority both welcomed the move – describing First’s decision as ‘great news’ for bus passengers.
Simon Pearson, Commercial Director for First in South Yorkshire, said: “This is great news for Sheffield. We have been very encouraged by the customer reaction to our price cuts and now want to make the lower fares available to everyone in Sheffield.”
Passengers today welcomed the news.
Angela Neeham, aged 42, of Ecclesfield, said: “At the minute I spend £16.50 on my weekly ticket. It’d be wonderful if that was reduced. I think it’s a good idea reducing fares to get people back on buses, the prices put a lot off.”
Russel Staniland, 25, of Parson Cross, said: “It is long overdue. Bus prices have been too expensive for too long, discouraging people from using them. It will make my current commute to work much cheaper. Winner.”
Coun Mick Jameson, Chairman of South Yorkshire Integrated Transport Authority, said: “We are currently working with bus operators and the City Council on a range of initiatives as part of the Sheffield Bus Partnership to make bus travel more appealing to customers.”
Coun Leigh Bramall, Sheffield Council’s cabinet member for business, skills and development, said: “This is great news for all existing and potential new bus customers in Sheffield.
“It demonstrates the benefits of the Bus Partnership and I applaud this move by First to attempt to stimulate further passenger growth.”
