I'd say its best just to be careful wherever you go in London. I feel safe in most of the areas considered rough in London (although I do feel slightly safer in central London). But I don't think i'd feel comfortable going to some areas in the evening, and i'm not sure i'd ever want to go on a night bus on my own.
Loughton is best avoided, as the local gangs of rich kids (who like to think they're from 'da ghetto') might throw some fake tan at you. ;d

Where i live at home in New Eltham, there used to be a gang who used to hang around by the Library at night and cause a lot of damage, though never heard of a shooting (from around 2005 till 2009ish), but the police stamped down on it and ive never seen them since, now its quite a nice place to live. Just a shame its surrounded by a lot of places which arnt too nice including Avery Hill and Coldhabour even though the latter i feel alright in during the day. The former was alright when i lived there from 1993 till 2003 but the council then started to move people in from the Ferrier Estate in there and it went downhill, was happy i got out when i did.
Also Bexleyheath didnt seem too nice at night but that has seem to have got better too.

I dont think certain parts of brixton is bad. I have been on the 250 numerous times years ago when gangs would come aboard the 250 from norbury to thornton heath and threaten to stab people and rob them on the bus. Luckily I was always with company and some of whom knew the boys Technically, the 250 doesn't go via Norbury. They'd have to get the 50 to get from Norbury to Thornton Heath.

It's when you start walking through places like Somerleyton & Angell Town, that things can get bad. In contrast anywhere south of West Croydon is quite nice places probably with the exception of New Addington.

In April, I had a assignment based on migration in London, using three areas as case studies - Brick Lane, Camden Town and Brixton. For the Brixton one, me and three mates done an independant trip walking from Brixton station and ending up somewhere near Dulwich Hill. I remember how interesting that walk was, and discovering Brixton has some quite nice houses along Loughborough Road! As your a local, I thought I'd ask you what this road - goo.gl/maps/LFllX is like... We walked down from the Town hall and through that estate at the end and got quite a bad vibe from it! Apart from that area, the only other area that I thought were a bit dodgy was the Somerleyton Estate which we walked past. There was a new-looking sports academy at the bottom of the estate on Loughborough Rd which was busy which I thought was good as it gets kids of the streets The picture I've attached is of the small estate on Rushcroft Road... Doesn't really give it justice, had bikes hanging of the railings on 1st floor flats!!!

Ahh, Rushcroft Road, before it was turned into a no through road, it was full of drunks and druggies as well as hookers. I think the hooker problem moved on when it was cut off at the Town Hall end but with Coldharbour Lane being a hot spot for drinkers at night, it's probably still in the same state. I'm glad you walked around Somerleyton and not through it - another rough area. Loughborough Road houses the notorious Myatts Field estate and a newagents which is surrounded with bulletproof glass. That picture you posted up is neighbouring Ingleton Street, apparently a lot of people have been mugged there when using it as a short cut.

My bad... I was refering to the road named 'Loughborough Park' and not 'Loughborough Road', with the nice houses! Interesting to read your comments though, Rushcroft Road did have a weird, eery and unpleasant atmosphere to it. I did see a number of people lurking around in cars and on the street, definitely would not want to be lost down there at night!

My cousins know many of the youths that live in those areas like Brixton, peckham, tulse Hill, west norwood, croydon and all that hence why I don't talk to my cousins really as I don't want to be caught up in all that madness. I am a family man and not on ' that road poo'.

I do remember back in my school time in 2004-2009 people were and I do quote "Reppin' Endz and Post Codes". It was as much hype as it is now, think that died down a tad though. Although gangs are still stabbing each other just to see who "Endz" is better then the other. Quite sad that we live in such a society. Also I and I'm sure many of use have seen idiots walking around with their trousers below their waist..

On a nicer note, Brentwood seem to be an alright place It is nice in Brentwood, though the cast of TOWIE seem determined to spoil the area by flooding it with their tacky shops and clubs TBH most of these 'dicey' areas are only bad if you are involved in said gangsta lifestyle. I lived on the Kingsmead for 6 years without incident. Swadbus is right about the government needing to take a tougher line on gang crime by using the Military, but they're thinly spread like too little marmalade over too much toast after Dave Cameron promised to fight America's wars for them

New Addington has to be one of the most depressing places in the South of England. The dumping ground for all of Croydon's dross which is saying something ;D I drove through it once on the way back from lovely Westerham, and have never felt so depressed- and it goes on for ages. I now take the back lanes through to the lovely West Wickham instead now- a billion times nicer!

As first of all they live in council flats which are being rented by their parents so they don't even own the house in the area they are living in first of all, then next they arfe fighting over what is government property anyway because they didn't create the area. They don't own the roads, pavements, buildings any of that stuff.
