The Surrey comet is running some history features this week and this one details introduction of one way system 50 years ago Interesting it mentions the then new red discs at top of stops to help people identify correct stop. Clarence Street was 2 way and still using trolleybuses a few months before, at least the conversion to diesel meant rewiring wasn't needed. The map is interesting only 2 traffic light controlled junctions (there are now 8 plus pedestrian crossings, and another 3 on Wood Street which later returned to 2-way traffic). Clarence Street was subsequently shut and part in front of station directionally reversed www.surreycomet.co.uk/news/10546738.Today_is_the_50th_anniversary_of_Kingston_s_one_way_system__Was_it_worth_it_/Today, Kingston has no bus garages. Scattered bus stands and a series of bus stops around the town centre where there are currently planning applications for digital advert signs, but countdown is fitted (shows the priorities nowadays, as adverts rank higher than passenger info)

Interesting that the newspaper article says people still get lost trying to get round Kingston. Whenever I visit Kingston, not often I admit, I struggle to find my way and I generally have a good sense of direction. Kingston is one of the few places that I find disorientating.

I got lost in 2008 when starting at the uni, but thankfully I know the labyrinth like the back of my hand ;D
