Routes 61, 273 and 661 - Chislehurst Road bridge
Overview
Route 61 operates between Chislehurst and Bromley North and route 273 operates between Petts Wood and Lewisham on all days of the week. Route 661 is a schoolday-only service between Petts Wood and Eltham College.
In April 2009 Chislehurst Road bridge was closed to buses. Routes 61, 273 and 661 were diverted via Poverest Road, Cray Avenue and Leesons Hill - (St Mary Cray). Following reconstruction, the bridge reopened to all vehicles in December 2012. During the closure we reviewed the use made of the diverted services. As a result route 61 returned to its original routeing but routes 273 and 661 continued to use the diversionary routeing via St Mary Cray pending a further review, which we have now carried out.
Why We Are Consulting
We would like to know what you think about our proposal to keep routes 61, 273 and 661 on their current routeings. This means the diversion for routes 273 and 661 via Poverest Road, Cray Avenue and Leesons Hill (St Mary Cray) being made permanent. Route 61 would continue to run via Chislehurst Road.
After the bridge closure in April 2009 a number of people started to make direct journeys to stops on the diversion via St Mary Cray. However journey times for some other passengers increased and there was no service at all for stops in Chislehurst Road. On reopening, route 61 was restored to the bridge and routes 273 / 661 remained on the diversion as this represented the best balance between the needs of different passenger trips. This remains the case. Passenger numbers on route 273 rose again following route 61 returning to Chislehurst Road but there is sufficient capacity. We consider that maintaining the new direct links would better serve passenger needs.
We considered exchanging the routeings, with route 273 operating via Chislehurst Road and route 61 via St Mary Cray. However this option would mean more passengers would have a longer journey time due to the higher overall numbers using route 61. We also looked at keeping both routes permanently on the diversionary routeing via St Mary Cray but this would leave Chislehurst Road without a bus service.
Please see map for further details.
