We now have a bit more detail courtesy of a TfL press release about the rolling stock order and devolved train services. TfL Press ReleaseRailway Gazette articleKey points are 39 trains form the base order. 30 for West Anglia, 8 for GOBLIN electrification, 1 for Romford - Upminster Shuttle. There will be contract options to allow for extra trains on any of the routes including existing electrified Overground routes. TfL / LOROL to take over operation of the Romford - Upminster service and responsibility for Emerson Park Station. West Anglia takeover planned for 31 May 2015. New trains for West Anglia due for 2018 with the usual rebranding/refresh of existing trains in the mean time. As already predicted stations will get the usual refresh with LOROL taking over the West Anglia stations with the exception of Liverpool St and Cheshunt. All good news if you live in the right bits of London.

Greater Anglia will be a shadow of its former self in Greater London. I think the only stations it will still serve in Greater London may be Liverpool Street, Stratford, Romford, Tottenham Hale and maybe stations from Tottenham Hale to Enfield Lock.

I think the only stations it will still serve in Greater London may be Liverpool Street, Stratford, Romford, Tottenham Hale and maybe stations from Tottenham Hale to Enfield Lock. Well TOCs generally concentrate more on their longer distance services as that's where the big money is. Local stopping services are a distraction. The inner suburban lines from Liverpool St have not had much care and attention paid to them for decades. All the Chingford Line has had is the 15 minute daily service (a definite plus point) and a few licks of paint and the odd new sign. The Enfield, Cheshunt and Shenfield routes have had next to no improvements. The rolling stock is worn out and you can't get the engrained muck off the Class 315s meaning the view out of the windows is permanently dirty. A TfL takeover can't come soon enough if it means we get some care and attention paid and new trains delivered and hopefully more frequent services (to Enfield and Cheshunt). I don't see extra services running to Chingford. They do keep the Tottenham Hale - Cheshunt stopping services in the short term which is a pain because TfL would do a much better job of those services but things may change once we get some extra tracks allowing more trains to run from Angel Rd to Stratford. Unfortunately the longer term 4 tracking up to Broxbourne, which would allow more local and fast trains to run has no date for implementation but the Government are studying the scheme (because the owners of Stansted keep demanding faster trains).

They recently refurbished some of the 315's (well, at least painted them outside and I think 315804 got snazzy new lights at the front and back and LED destination boards), but they are approaching 40... they're in better shape than the Class 317's though.

TfL have confirmed that they have agreed with LOROL that they will operate the devolved West Anglia services to Chingford, Enfield and Cheshunt (via 7 Sisters) plus Romford - Upminster. The services transfer on 31 May 2015 and then LOROL run them for 17 months after which the entire Overground network will be retendered. There have been big hints that LOROL would take over the services but this is the formal confirmation of their appointment and the contract duration. LOROL have to hope that their short time with West Anglia goes well and is not fraught with problems as it may detract from their ability to bid for the replacement contract. TfL press release

TfL Press Release on extra London Overgound services
I am quite to surprised to see the additional services on the Gospel Oak to Barking Line, was not expecting any sort of increases until Electrification or New Trains are introduced. Most of the focus is on Westbound travel. (Correct me if I'm wrong but..) It's also not clear whether the additional services will run on Weekends as well. It's good to see the East London Line changes include Saturday's, because Saturday's can quite busy too. The connections that London Overground (specifically the ELL) has to all the various modes of transport, it comes as no surprise the route is busy and overcrowded, meaning more capacity and service increases are added. When Crossrail becomes fully operational I only wonder what LO will do to the ELL...

When Crossrail becomes fully operational I only wonder what LO will do to the ELL... The GOBLIN extras are MF only. The new national timetable from December is on the Network Rail website. I think they've simply decided to run the extra train in service on its positioning journeys rather than it run empty to perform the important 1737 off Gospel Oak which is the real jam buster journey. The morning train will also be a help as early trains are stupidly busy off Barking. I don't think any more can be done now as they've squeezed every last movement out of the track and fleet. Wait until 2016 when the line will be blockaded and closed for months to allow the electrification work to be done! That's going to be fun.

It has been announced that London Overground will get 17 class 315 units for Chingford and Enfield services officially on 31st May. The other 44 units will be transferred to Crossrail (there are 61 class 315s) on same date.
All the 315s are due to be replaced (2017 by new Crossrail trains) and by new LOROL electric sets 30 units (+1 for Romford-Upminster and 8 for Gospel Oak Barking) by 2018, order is shortlisted but not yet final, the discrepancy between 17 units and 30 units is the Cheshunt trains which will see the 1983-84 class 317s replaced (although it seems these might be retained for peak hour trains somewhere).
As the class 315s only expected to remain couple of years it is unlikely they will receive any upgrade, probably just cosmetic fixes and large stickers with the new Operators name.
Since the shortlist of train builders was announced, Siemens have gained contracts new units for SWT, and Hitachi for Abellio Scotland, so possibly they cannot deliver to original proposed timetable.

Another article, another omission of the Watford Junction to Euston Line.
Maybe it is just me but the news articles and press releases from TfL do not seem to be consistent, some of information mentions the Watford Junction line others do not. I could just be missing something or seeing things, but does anyone know if the Watford Junction Line is (or is not) receiving an additional 5th Car?

The Watford DC line will receive 5 Car 378's before receiving new trains alongside the WA inner surburbans, GOBLIN & Upminster Shuttle, in a few years time.
