A simple question about route 268 - does anyone know why it has such a good and consistent level of service every day of the week?
Most routes see a fair amount of variation between different times of day and days of the week whereas the 268 is pretty much x15-20 early morning and x12 the rest of the time every day of the week. The only other route with this sort of service frequency consistency is the RV1.

Something I wonder about route 268. Is it usually operated by Cadets, E200s or a mixture?

Mostly cadets, but the odd E200 shows up (though it's quite rare)

The odd Optare Solo comes out to play now and again! The 268 is a nice route, pretty short and not overly busy, the frequency seems to handle the amount of people well. Optare SoloThis gives you a flavour of what the route had in the past Metroline DLD eraMidibus era

Thanks Green Kitten and Vjaska. I am keener to ride a refurb Cadet than an E200 on route 268, so was concerned in case route 268 had been the priority for E200s.

It got a service reduction a few months ago.

Does the 268 have any restrictions that prevent double deckers going on it? Because I've never seen any Double decks on the 268 and does the double decks at GR have blinds for the 268?

I can only presume that the residents of Belsize Park are not in favour of any double deckers passing their houses as I can't to seem to find any restrictions - the double deck N5 follows it from Golders Green to Belsize Park IIRC and certainly Swiss Cottage & Finchley Road poses no issues either.

Probably worth mentioning that the "resident not wanting passengers to see in our house" was the alleged reason 210 (with which 268 shares a stretch of road) was refused deckers.
Then again, I've never used a 268 before.

Then again, I've never used a 268 before. The stretch along the 210 opposite Kenwood House is quite affluent too - thank the bus Gods that DDs operate on the 210 now! Can't they let us admire nice architecture from the top deck?

The 268 just doesn't need DDs - the route does carry standing loads at peak times but aside from a few school crush journeys I've never seen one leave people behind.
In practice you could squeeze a DD through Belsize Village but you'd need to do some tree pruning first, or put some beefy deflectors on the top deck!! I have a feeling the residents of Belsize Park (the road itself) would lynch TfL if they decided to send 12 ton d/ds thundering down there on the 268. I don't know how well full size deckers would work on Heath Street - yes, the N5 makes easy work of it, but that's in the small hours when the roads are empty. I took the 603 down there a fair few times in it's first year or two of service and remember it being *very* tight going indeed with peak congestion. A few journeys a day yes, but a x12 basis I can't see working (cf. Southwood Lane in Highgate). Rosslyn Hill and the High Street would be fine.
If any route through Hampstead should get deckers I'd go for the 46. Might take a downstairs seat for any trip passing Kentish Town West, though.
