I spend a fair amount of my time looking at bus schedules. Given that return trip times are generally kept below 3 hours, I started looking at routes with trip times of longer than 90 minutes. The X26 has a few trips that are 2 hours and 10 minutes long - but then it is a limited stop express route. After that, I believe the 25 has the longest run times with some PM peak trips taking a whopping 121 minutes from end to end . Driving a long express or night route is one thing, but for the busiest route in London and a high likelihood of serving every single stop on the route, I only hope that trips of this length have a live changeover scheduled. The variance is significant too - the shortest weekday trip time going towards Ilford is 63 minutes. Which other routes have trip lengths of 90 minutes or above - does anyone on here routinely ride or drive from end to end on such routes?

Londonbusroutes.net gives a summary of shortest / longest trip times for every route - strangely the G1 almost trips your 90 minute parameter on weekday AM journeys. Not sure I'd have guessed that one. A quick scan shows a lot of routes which are just under the 90 minute parameter which aligns with your remark about return trip times and I suspect that is deliberate. Of course your observation about route 25 is another aspect which shows why it is a difficult route to run - lots and lots of crew changes plus any delays affects driver hours compliance very quickly.

Nice table, psergeiv, but aren't those distances in miles instead of km?

Nice table, psergeiv, but aren't those distances in miles instead of km? You are correct Green Kitten! Most of those figures should be in miles! There are also a few calculation errors. An example in regards to metric error is Route 66. It should be 9.5 miles, which is around 13/14km An example of an error of calculation is Route X26. It is 21 miles, which is 34km. I know for a fact that from Oxford Circus to Ilford is not 11km.. No way! More like 11 miles psergeiv - I commend you taking time out to post the info...Fix up a few figures and it will be perfect

Green Kitten and jrussa thanks for correction. Silly me! I showed figures in miles and marked them in 'kms'. All now corrected!

Why am I not surprised the 14 has the slowest schedule speed? I always stay away from that route!
But the 401 will be an interesting ride for me to go on soon...

I've only done the 401 once and it was pretty busy but that's because the 401 in front had conked out in Thamesmead. We had two loads of passengers for our bus. Loved the steep hill it goes up after Belvedere.

Those are the average running times for the whole trip. There are far higher averages between stops Some of the more meanly timed 140 trips at night get just 6 minutes (e.g. 0122 to 0128) to get from Northolt station to Yeading Lane/Willow Tree Lane (2.1 miles) - this works out at an average of 21mph, the highest I've found so far. Has anyone found any higher?

Do the 401 at night as thats when its very thrashy. TC's buses also get hammered in the evenings - I am partial to a ride on the 60, 194 and 197 in the evenings. The same can be said of many routes where the driver is on their last trip.
