AA president Edmund King added: ‘It is somewhat ironic that cars are banned from the most polluted street in London - Oxford Street. The vehicles that have most effect on air quality in London are buses, taxis and trucks.
‘The first move should be to target the gross polluters and get them off our roads in order to have a greater and more immediate impact on air quality.’

The vehicles that have most effect on air quality in London are buses, taxis and trucks. ‘The first move should be to target the gross polluters and get them off our roads in order to have a greater and more immediate impact on air quality.’ It's not ironic at all. Cars in Oxford St would be a ludicrous use of scarce road space. Mr King also fails to appreciate that many of the buses on Oxford St are hybrids, or of a high euro spec or modified to reduce harmful emissions. I'm struggling to understand what trucks have got to do with Oxford St - deliveries are made to the rear of premises typically and usually at extreme times of the day when there is much less traffic. I'd certainly like to see a comparative analysis of taxi emissions vs buses. The taxi trade has escaped any great sanction on the use of old diesel engined vehicles. Perhaps Mr King could explain how cars could replace buses on Oxford St. Let's be generous and assume each car had 2 passengers in it. Even if you assume the average ridership on a London bus of 16 passengers you're talking about 8 cars for every bus. If you assume the buses are fully loaded as are the cars (let's say 5 people) you're still talking about 17 cars for every bus. There is simply no comparison and that's before you get into any debate about congestion and where the cars would park. More claptrap from the motorists' favourite lobby group.
